Tonight’s show ought to be interesting. The military, “r and r” for the winners, and death by a cook. Always seems to be busy in Ramsey’s kitchen!
The show opens with a recap of the women’s episode of victory, Aaron’s tears, and the dumb blonde joke. And we are reminded that Eddie is history.
After Eddie’s dismissal the cooks go back to the dorms. Josh is upset because Rock nominated him. Josh informs us that he is stepping up the game. Josh aren’t you the one who has made smart cracks about Ramsey. In my book you already have three strikes. Rock and Josh have a talk and Rock tries to point out that Josh isn’t necessary a leader. Josh declares war.
The women, on the other hand, seem more than willing to rest and congratulate each other. Julia stays up looking at the recipe book because she knows she needs all the help she can get. She falls asleep reading while the rest of the women are tucked up in bed.
5:58, reveille blows. Aaron wakes up with cramps (this guy needs to go). One of the girls is caught in the shower. The military go all over the dorms and order the would-be chefs downstairs. Of course, Vinnie has an opinion about the military. Doesn’t he respect anyone!. Aaron has to have help getting dressed – Rock won’t leave him behind.
Ramsey greets the cooks and he doesn’t look happy. He reminds them of how bad their service was – no consistency, none of them together – and informs them that he can see they are not ready for dinner service. Ramsey has decided to do something he never has before -- open for breakfast. The challenge is that they will cook the most amazing consistent breakfast for America’s Finest (military). The Army and Navy enter clapping. Each stands behind chair. Julia cries because of the honor she feels cooking for the Army and Navy. Joanna loves men in uniform – she doesn’t seem to see what the challenge really is or the importance that is being put on their shoulders.
Red cooks for the Army – blue for the Navy. The teams must work with percission and consistency to get the meals out. Julia has been named leader of the Red Team. She knows this type of cooking and assigns roles.
The Blue Team sees Aaron in trouble immediately by starting a fire. The women are ready – the men aren’t. Aaron again seems intent on missing the pan and fire erupts, burning the omelets. Bonnie feels that the women have bonded. They appear to be cooperating well. Twenty plates have gone in 17 minutes for the Army while the Navy customers have none.
Ramsey wants to know what is going on. Aaron has burnt the omelet and Ramsey goes off on him. Aaron wants to switch and Josh helps him. Josh and Brad take over for Aaron and start getting the meals out. The women are moving fast. Julia shows leadership quality but the meals – especially Joanna’s are coming back cold. Joanna doesn’t understand hash browns. Ramsey keeps shrieking while Julia finds the plates too hot. Ramsey calls the women together and makes them touch the food which is stone cold. He tells them to shut it but did he mean the kitchen should be shut down???
When we come back from commercial, we learn that Ramsey just meant for the women to straight up. At 30 minutes, the girls have hit a road block. Ramsey has not shut down the kitchen, but has made them regroup. The men’s kitchen has cold food. Brad orders hot hash browns. Ramsey tells them they are about to “sinks the Navy.” Ramsey is upset because Aaron isn’t doing anything.
Back to the Red Kitchen, Julia tells them that they are almost there. The last plate goes out. Ramsey congratualtes them and he then tells Julia that she was exceptional. Ramsey sends Julia over to help the Blue Team and tells her to tell them what to do. She has control over the men and she is working hard. Brad isn’t happy that she has been sent to help. The Blue Tables are finally getting their food. Ramsey thanks her and Josh becomes more upset because they had to have her help them.
Ramsey asks the troops if they enjoyed breakfast. They tell him yes and are dismissed. Vinnie is upset because they couldn’t serve those that serve – a change in attitude here?? The guys have blown it. Ramsey is upset because there is no obvious leader in the Blue Kitchen and the men are upset. The men will have to pay for their mistakes by peeling 1,000 pounds worth of produce – potatoes and onions. The women will have a special day arranged for them by the military. Jen is celebrating again. Ramsey orders the men to work.
Vinnie seees all the vegetables on the military truck and wonders where the fork lift is. Funny, Vinnie – you are the fork lift. Josh is feeling sorry for himself. The girls gloat! Girls, never ever gloat. It just gets you in more trouble later. As the Red Team leaves, the Blue Team gets started with their punishment. A crisis happens -- Aaron passes out, hitting his head on the stove.
The men call for medics. Aaron has scared Vinnie we learn as an ambulance rushes Aaron to the hospital. The women are on a helicopter flying over the ocean. Ramsey reminds them to think of what the guys are doing. They land on the USS Midway and are greeted by Scott. They visit the kitchens where dummies are set up as workers. One of the women says that the dummy looks like Josh and we flash back to the kitchen where Josh, Vinnie, Rock, and Brad are preparing the onions and potatoes. Dinner is served on the USS Midway deck. Ramsey gives the women advice and then they take off in the helicopter to return to the dorms. The women relax by continuing their party and getting into the hot tub. The men return and meet to discuss their problems. They need a leader but all think they can do it. Brad is nominated and will serve as a leader even though Josh was nominated. The men go to sleep and we do not see Aaron.
Morning comes and the Blue Team has more confidence, determination and a drive to win. The women feel pressure to continue their success. They are going to be focused yet get worried when they learn that Julia has never done a crème buelle. Bonnie immediately gets worried.
Aaron is in the hospital. Ramsey sits in his office and picks up the phone. He calls Aaron and tells him he won’t be returning. Aaron’s doctor will not allow him to continue because of his illness. Ramsey tells Aaron that he’s proud of him wanting to come back but Aaron has a serious illness. Ramsey sighs and Aaron tells us of his disappointment. Ramsey puts his coat out on the rack and I begin to wonder if this is the where the ambulance in the commercials come from!!
Ramsey enters the kitchen and tells the men that Aaron won’t be returning. Ramsey asks who will take control. The men inform him that Brad would and Ramsey say: “Thank you!” Ramsey tells them that they are short of water for the restaurant and will have to get the water during service since the men lost.
The doors open and the customers arrive. The men start working on their first order and Ramsey is upset with them early in the session. He jumps on Rock and immediately calls him a “donkey.” Over in the women’s kitchen Ramsey delivers the first order. Joanna feels she will get her chance to shine. Ramsey calls her back and makes her taste the dish. The risotto is not up to Ramsey’s standards – too salty -- and she is ordered to start again.
The Blue Team is trying to impress Ramsey with their first appetizers. Ramsey informs Rock that they are good and out they go. Jean Philippe comes and tells Ramsey that they need water. Ramsey sends Josh after water. Jean Philippe shows him where to go and Josh is hurting by the time he gets back from carrying the water and from unloading the veggies.
During the commercial break, we learn that Ramsey will have a new show this fall -- “Kitchen Nightmares.” I’ve seen the British version – this will be good!
Josh has the water and the Red Kitchen is having problems with the main dish. The dish is raw and Ramsey isn’t happy. The men are working together. Ramsey likes the chatter that Rock has started. Ramsey is happy they are sounding like a team. The Red Team is still having trouble with the appetizers. Joanna is called back and he smells the trout (I think) which smells off – it’s rancid. Ramsey asks if the appetizers had gone out. She says no – and he sends Joanna out to another section. He shouts you killed someone.
At an hour, the Red Kitchen still hasn’t served any appetizers. Blue has served half of theirs. They have the entrée on the serving table. Ramsey calls the men together. They have a raw egg and he smacks it on Vinnie’s chest. Rock thinks Vinnie may go off on Ramsey but Vinnie admits that he has screwed up again. Vinnie bites his tongue even though he hates it. Blue tables are still waiting for entrees but the Red Team is now getting appetizers out thanks to Julia and Jen. Ramsey asks about the spaghetti. Jen has run out of spaghetti because she threw it in the trash. Jen takes it out of the trash and washes it off to serve. Julia gets upset because Jen has done this. Julia is quality control and Jen is lucky Ramsey didn’t see it. There is a problem with the Beef Wellington on the Blue side. Ramsey goes off on Josh – thinking he tried to sabotage the service.
At 9:04 – Red Team gets appetizers out. They are now on the entrees. The Blue Team is still working on the first entree. Ramsey is upset at the quality of the cooking. Now he is angry at Brad because he has burned the Wellingtons. The kitchen is at a standstill.
Jen’s Wellingtons are overcooked. Ramsey is upset with that. The customers are leaving. Ramsey tells the Red Team to come and look because their tables are leaving. The chefs are told to get out and we go to commerical.
As the kitchens are shut down, Ramsey is upset and must name a losing team. Ramsey is exhausted. He informs the guys they haven’t completed a service. He gets on Brad’s case for not being a good leader. Rock is complimented on his chatter. The ladies didn’t serve 95% of their entrees. He calls on Joanna for an explanation. Ramsey said he doesn’t trust Bonnie. Ramsey feels that there are no winners in Hell’s Kitchen tonight, but the losers are the Red Team. The men breathe a sign of relief. Ramsey doesn’t name a standout to pick the nominees for eviction, but he tells the Red Team to meet and decide among themselves who will be on the block.
Back in the dorms, the men celebrate. The women decide that it should be between Joanna and Julia. Bonnie says she has to go with Joanna. Julia points out that Jen trashed the spaghetti and took it out of the trash and put it back on the line. Julia tells Jen that’s not right. Bonnie gets off on Julia for not knowing as much as the others about fine cuisine (as if?). Melissa agrees with Bonnie. She says it took 10 years for her to learn the herbs. Melissa informs the group that they must – we have to come together as a team and nominate two people – they agree Joanna and Julia. Excuse me – I’d nominate Jen!
The women go out and stand in front of Ramsey. He calls on Joanna and asks for the two nominees. Joanna tells them she is the first nominee. Joanna said the team nominated Julia but Jen steps in and says she is the next nominee. Wow! She knows she did something wrong – or is she keeping Julia around to sacrifice later. Maybe Jen thinks she is safe since he didn’t see the spaghetti incident.
Ramsey looks surprised and Julia looks around at Jen. Ramsey wonders why the women have nominated Julia. Joanna tells him that Bonnie and Melissa thought Julia wasn’t experienced enough. Surprise, surprise! Jen tells the truth about the spaghetti. All three step forward. Ramsey asks if Julia feels if she is out of her league. She tells Ramsey, no – she’s going to shock everyone. He agrees and sends Julia back to the line. Jen and Joanna plead their case. Joanna says she has never made the same mistake as Jen did with taking food out of the trash, but Ramsey points out that she used rancid fish in her appetizers. Ramsey thinks they both should leave but he sends Joanna packing.
Ramsey shakes his head at the women’s team and turns to see Joanna leave. Joanna thinks she will be a better person for her work in Hell’s Kitchen. Ramsey points out it’s not that difficult to be a chef. Jen is upset with herself. Julia says she has drive and she will be getting more dangerous. Bonnie is upset and thinks the men will pick the women off one by one. Ramsey is deep in thought. Ramsey doesn’t think Joanna will be able to run a business.
Next week. Ramsey puts the contestants taste to the test. One of them gets sick during the test. Vinnie threatens to sink the kitchen. Bonnie cries and says she wants to go home. Ramsey overrules the choice of who is going home next week. Things are picking up In Hell’s Kitchen!
