READY, SET, GO!
In sun soaked Miami, Florida, the tropical gateway to America, speedboats transported the eleven All-Star Teams along the beautiful shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the starting line where Phil stood waiting. After giving the Teams his obligatory speech, Phil raised his arm, issued his famous words, "The world is waiting for you," and signaled the beginning of the race.
After opening the clue sending them to Quito, Ecuador, best friends and Miami residents Oswald & Danny took the lead out the parking lot as former dating couple John Vito & Jill and newlyweds Rob & Amber wisely followed the pair who naturally knew the quickest route to the airport. With old instincts and feeling stirring from the drive, Jill commented, "John Vito and I really loved each other and I think we still have that caring for each other that we had during season three and I hope it works to our advantage this time."
Pulling into the parking lot near the airport, newlyweds Rob & Amber grabbed the second shuttle behind former couple John Vito & Jill and even held it for best friends Oswald & Danny as payment for leading them all the way there. Later, Rob remarked, "It was the first kind gesture I have made, so I want it noted. It killed me to do it, too."
As the shuttles neared the terminals, the Teams had a very important decision to make as they could book tickets on one of two flights out of Miami: Copa Airlines, departing at 3:30pm or American Airlines departing at 3:50. Teams needed to figure out that while the American flight left later, it would land two hours before the Copa flight.
With a crucial decision to be made, John Vito & Jill, Rob & Amber, and Danny & Oswald all made the shrewd choice of asking their shuttle driver which airline's terminal would be the first stop. Upon learning American Airlines was closer, the three Teams exited their respective shuttles at the terminal and, after confirming that the American flight landed sooner, booked tickets on the flight with high fives all around.
In another shuttle, Mary convinced her coalminer husband David to go to the Copa terminal since the flight left earlier. Their bad decision was compounded when they booked the flight at the Copa counter only asking about the arrival times afterwards. With their fate sealed on the second flight, the stunned David & Mary looked on in disbelief.
However, the plucky pair seized an opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade when their rivals from Season 10, Dustin & Kandice, strolled up to the counter and they told the beauty queens that the Copa flight landed earlier. Mary remarked, "We don't want to help them. We want them out." David added, "This is an entirely different ballgame. This is the best of the best. You gotta do what you gotta do." To make matters worse for the beauty queens, David & Mary helped out married parents Teri & Ian by telling them that the American flight was faster allowing them to snag the last seats just behind cousins Charla & Mirna.
With the American flight full, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice settled for tickets on the Copa flight with life partners Joe & Bill, married couple Uchenna & Joyce, dating couple Eric & Danielle, friends Kevin & Drew, and coal miner and wife David & Mary.
Landing in Quito, Ecuador, Teams on the American flight raced out of the airport into taxis heading to Plaza San Francisco. With the help of a taxi driver who knew a short cut, newlyweds Rob & Amber arrived first, moments ahead of best friends Danny & Oswald. Both Teams ran across the plaza on a rainy evening to the cluebox waiting on the other side. Opening the clue, the newlyweds discovered they had to travel 3 miles to Pim's Restaurant where they needed to pull a number to receive one of three departure times the next morning: 7:00am, 7:15am, and 7:30am.
Arriving at Pim's Restaurant, newlyweds Rob & Amber snagged one of the 7:00am departures along with former dating couple John Vito & Jill, cousins Charla & Mirna, and best friends Danny & Oswald. Celebrating another early lead, Rob kissed Amber, saying, "Baby, you did good today. See? We haven't lost it. It's been two years, but we still got it."
Due to a slow start out of the airport, the disappointed married parents Teri & Ian settled for a 7:15am departure along with beauty queens Dustin & Kandice, life partners Joe & Bill, and married couple Uchenna & Joyce from the second plane. Losing out in a footrace to Pim's Restaurant, coalminer David & Mary, still lamenting their huge airport mistake, took a 7:30am departure with newly dating couple Eric & Danielle.
Best friends Kevin & Drew sunk to last place after an ailing Drew tripped and fell jumping out of the taxi van at Plaza San Francisco. After writhing around in pain on the wet pavement, Drew stood up and hobbled back to the taxi with the encouragement of Kevin. On the way to Pim's Restaurant, Drew diagnosed himself with a dislocated shoulder as he continued to wince in pain. Kevin calmly noted, "You wouldn't be moving it like that if it was separated." After the pair bandaged up his cut knee, Drew's shoulder began to feel better, and they claimed the last 7:30am departure time.
After the sun rose over the beautiful city of Quito, the four lead Teams opened their clue at 7:00am. It instructed them to drive 65 miles to Hacienda Yanahurco, an ecological reserve in Cotopaxi National Park where they would find their next clue. They were advised to enter the national park through the north entrance.
Employing the services of a taxi driver who led them out of Quito to the northern entrance of Cotopaxi National Park, newlyweds Rob & Amber drove through the rugged but beautiful terrain to Hacienda Yanahurco where they encountered the first Detour of the race. They had to choose between Wrangle It and Recover It. In Wrangle It, teams had to help local cowboys to lasso, tie down and groom one wild horse whose hooves have grown so long that they cannot walk properly. Team members had to use traditional tools to clip its hooves to a safe length, and to trim its mane and tail. When they set the horse free, they would receive their next clue. In Recover It, one Team member had to put on an historical military uniform. Then, the team must search the field for three items missing from the uniform: an epaulette, a button and a sword. Once done, a general would hand them their next clue.
After choosing to Recover It because animals can be so unpredictable, Rob donned the military uniform as the pair began searching the open field for the missing items. While the sword came easy, the newlyweds quickly became wary of the task when they couldn't easily find the epaulette and button.
With other Teams quickly approaching inside the national park, rather than wasting more time, Rob & Amber decided to switch tasks. After helping the wranglers rope in a wild stallion, the newlyweds helped tie the horse down in preparation for grooming. As she clipped its nails, Amber commented, "This is the weirdest thing I've ever done."
As Rob & Amber finished up the task instructing them to run up a nearby hill to the Pit Stop at Mirador Cotopaxi, best friends Danny & Oswald arrived at Hacienda Yanahurco and chose to Wrangle It as well. On the decision, Oswald noted, "I've always wanted a career in beauty, so if I can cut the nails of a horse I can sure cut somebody's hair and give them a manicure."
Stepping onto the mat in first place, newlyweds Rob & Amber received the great news from Phil that they had won a trip for two from Travelocity to the spectacular Four Seasons Resort in Whistler, Canada. A happy Rob said, "I told you, Phil. When you said, 'Go', it was on."
After a very poor showing the day before by arriving at Pim's Restaurant in tenth place, dating couple Eric & Danielle slowly moved up the ranks by passing beauty queens Dustin & Kandice and married couple Uchenna & Joyce on the rocky terrain of Cotopaxi National Park. At Hacienda Yanahurco, the dating couple then hustled through the horse grooming and outran life partners Joe & Bill up the hill to the Pit Stop to claim fourth place.
While the day significantly brightened for Eric & Danielle, it turned much darker for cousins Charla & Mirna, who drove to the south entrance of Cotopaxi National Park, and formerly dating couple John Vito & Jill who followed a local in the completely wrong direction. An exasperated Jill sighed, "This may put us in last place. Just when you think it's all going so smooth, it can go downhill real fast." The "downhill" Jill referred to hit the very rock bottom for the duo when they finally arrived at Cotopaxi only to realize they went to the south entrance rather than the north.
Lifelong friends Kevin & Drew encountered a problem of their own on their drive through the rocky terrain of Cotopaxi National Park when their front tire went flat. Concerned that any Team behind them could pass by if they took the time to fix the tire, the pair gambled that the truck would survive the remaining distance to Hacienda Yanahurco. With their tire literally shredding apart and falling off the rim, the pair flirted with disaster but ultimately their risk paid off as they arrived at the Detour and finished in tenth place.
Stepping onto the mat in last place, formerly dating couple John Vito & Jill received the bad news from Phil that they had been eliminated from the race. A stunned Jill said, "This is not how we wanted to come back. We had high expectations." Afterwards, John Vito reflected, "Coming back on the race really brought us back together and it was great." Jill added, "I think it reunified our relationship to each other and how much we care about each other. So maybe this is going to put us, John Vito & Jill, on a new path that's definitely more than just friends."
