Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 7:42am, newlyweds Rob & Amber opened their clue instructing them to fly over 2,400 miles to Santiago, Chile. When they landed, they had to travel twelve miles by taxi to the corporate headquarters of Codelco, the largest copper mining company in the world.
The rough terrain leaving Cotopaxi National Park caused problems for a few Teams. After Mirna got her truck stuck in a muddy ditch, her new friends and allies coal miner and wife David & Mary used a towrope to rescue her and her cousin, Charla. Afterwards, Mirna remarked, "We like David & Mary. They're definitely the most trustworthy of the other Teams that are here. So I guess you could call it a little bit of an alliance."
Nearly an hour later, last place Kevin & Drew departed the Pit Stop hoping to catch the other Teams. Drew, who had a difficult night because of altitude sickness and his nagging shoulder injury, managed to run his truck into a ditch as Mirna had earlier. With nobody to help them out, Kevin took the initiative to attach the towrope to himself in front of the truck pulling as hard as he could while Drew gunned the engine. This Darwin Award moment in the making actually paid off as the truck began to move. The only snag occurred when Drew kept accelerating after driving past Kevin forgetting he was still attached to the truck. Averting disaster, a panicked Kevin shouted for Drew to stop and the pair then continued on their way to the airport.
FINDING FLIGHTS
Arriving at Quito Airport, newlyweds Rob & Amber discovered the earliest flight to Santiago would be on LAN, connecting through Lima and landing at 1:50am. However, the flight also connected in Guayaquil that required a local carrier because LAN didn't fly domestic routes. As Rob & Amber purchased their tickets and headed to Guayaquil, best friends Oswald & Danny booked the same LAN flight at a travel agency, but took a later regional flight to Guayaquil.
Soon, the remaining eight Teams began to assemble at Quito Airport all booking tickets on a later Taca flight, also connecting through Lima that would land in Santiago at 2:30am. With the newlyweds already out of the airport, the burning question on everyone's mind was, "Where are Rob & Amber?" This played into Rob's hand as he noted, "I want them to be preoccupied with us because it distracts them from what they should be doing." However, Rob & Amber and Oswald & Danny got blindsided by a distraction of their own when their flight from Guayaquil to Lima was delayed resulting in a revised landing time in Santiago at 2:50am. The quartet knew their only hope would be to catch the Taca flight when they landed in Lima.
CAUSING A STIR
As the other eight Teams boarded their Taca flight to Lima, coal miner and wife David & Mary put their bags in the overhead bin of the first class cabin, a trick they learned on the last race, but watched in shock as an irritable Drew quickly threw the bags on the floor. Defending his action, Drew said, "You put your ___ where your seat is. That's it." David warned, "Drew's the only one playing dirty. So he started it, so it's on."
Landing in Lima, the eight Teams boarded their connecting Taca flight to Santiago just as Rob & Amber's and Oswald & Danny's delayed flight landed. After pleading and begging to get onto the Taca flight, they received the bad news that the flight had closed. Now faced with landing fifteen minutes behind the other Teams, Rob lamented, "Within a period of ten minutes you can go from being in first place to last place. It's a miserable game this race."
Landing in Santiago, Chile, married couple Uchenna & Joyce and dating couple Eric & Danielle took the lead out of the airport and arrived together at the Codelco building in first place. Opening their clue, they discovered the first Roadblock of the race. In this Roadblock, one Team member had to enter the ground floor boardroom and search the boardroom for letters of the alphabet that were on display. Teams needed to figure out that the majority of the letters when unscrambled would spell out one of the ten destinations inscribed on the plaques hanging on the wall. When they think they solved the puzzle, they had to show their answer to the security guard who would hand them their next clue if they were correct.
Stepping into the boardroom, Eric and Joyce noticed the myriad letters marked on ties and sleeves of businessmen as well as the letters on their lighters, pens, and notepads, but didn't know how to put the information together.
As Kevin and Bill joined the room with equal amounts of confusion, Dustin quickly assessed the letters and combined them together correctly to spell Chuquicamata after looking at the picture hanging on the wall. Opening up the clue with Dustin, the beauty queens learned they would be flying 230 miles to the city of Calama and make their way to Chuquicamata, the world's largest open pit copper mine.
After Amber and Oswald, who landed on the later flight, solved the puzzle by seeing an H on a pen, only Joyce and Ian remained in the boardroom stumped as a frustrated Uchenna fumed, "You've gotta be kidding me! This is driving me fricking nuts!" Eventually, a weary Joyce looked on the wall and wrote down Chuquicamata offering her answer to Ian out of sheer mercy. Teri and Uchenna both breathed a sigh of relief when their partners received their clue and the two Teams made their way to the airport. On the way, a confounded Joyce remarked, "I'm usually good with attention to detail."
STIRRING THE POT
At Santiago Airport, before all Teams booked the same flight, Rob tried to stir up a commotion when Eric skipped ahead in line as a new counter opened. Eric quickly shut Rob down by pointing out he would have done the same thing, a notion to which Amber agreed. While the argument continued, Rob didn't approve of Amber's defense of Eric, remarking, "We're a Team over here. You're supposed to have my back." To this charge Amber retorted, "I don't mind Rob stirring trouble, but he was so wrong it made him look silly."
DUMPING GROUND
Landing in Calama, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice took an early lead to the entrance of Chuquicamata where the Teams donned safety gear before running to the edge of the mine. Making the quick change in a chaos of protective orange vests, newlyweds Rob & Amber opened their clue first to find a Detour that had them choose between By Hand and By Machine. In By Hand, Teams had to choose a two-ton tire and, by properly aligning the bolts and washers, finish securing it to a dump truck. In By Machine, each Team member had to take a turn driving a huge front loader to transfer enough gravel to cover a marked yellow line on a stick.
With ten years of construction under his belt, Rob led the way in the choosing to operate the massive front loader machine, helping novice Amber take a turn at the controls. After she successfully dumped a load of gravel on the marker, a proud Rob took over and began to slowly fill enough gravel to inch up to the yellow line. After reaching the line, the newlyweds opened their clue instructing them to drive 71 miles and enter the landscape known as Valley of the Moon. The sharp turns and shifting sands required Teams drive no more than 40kph. When they exited the Valley of the Moon, they could resume driving 50kph as they searched for the Valley of the Dead, the Pit Stop for this leg of the race.
As Rob & Amber drove away, David & Mary realized they didn't pay attention to detail in aligning the washers, forcing the pair to unscrew them all and correct the problem. This caused the coal miner and wife to fall to last place behind beauty queens Dustin & Kandice, who physically struggled to tighten the bolts, and married parents Teri & Ian who couldn't find the marked cars.
After newlyweds Rob & Amber collected another first place finish along with a pair of motorcycles, the race for last place heated up. Beauty queens Dustin & Kandice followed cousins Charla & Mirna who in turned followed a taxi driver until he pulled over. Along the roadside, Mirna confronted the beauty queens about splitting the large fee. When the beauty queens hesitated at the idea, Mirna asked them to either leave or pay up. After they left, Charla & Mirna continued arguing with the driver until they forked over money just as Teri & Ian and David & Mary passed them. Now in last place, a furious Mirna railed on the beauty queens, "They just wanted to use us. I don't like the way they play." Charla added, "Beauty is sometimes skin deep. It's easy to make yourself beautiful with plastic surgery, but to have a pure heart and to have morals is not easy to make up."
WILD RIDE
Exiting the Valley of the Moon, best friends Kevin & Drew held a slim lead over the only three Teams behind them. However, they didn't pay attention to the speed limit and thought they still only could go 40kph. This allowed Teri & Ian, David & Mary, and Charla & Mirna to pass them. In a flurry of passing, the cousins also passed the coal miners sending Mary into a fit. She remarked, "When I saw what I believed was my friends trying to pass me? No, the game was on. I ain't giving this game to nobody."
The race became even more chaotic and stressful as all five Teams made an incorrect right turn just before the Pit Stop. Dustin & Kandice realized the mistake first to claim sixth place with married parents Teri & Ian close behind in the seventh. The remaining three Teams circled in the small town trying to find the Valley of the Death. Cousins Charla & Mirna asked another taxi driver who began to lead them until Kevin & Drew cut them off and drove 40kph. A livid Mirna shouted, "You drive like a girl" and proceeded to pass the best friends. Right behind them, coal miner and wife David & Mary also passed the best friends who still didn't realize the speed limit had returned to 50kph.
ELIMINATION
After Charla & Mirna and David & Mary claimed eighth and ninth place, best friends Kevin & Drew stepped onto the mat in last place. Right after Phil told the pair they had been eliminated from the race, Kevin told Drew to be a good sport after he walked off the mat. The difficult leg ultimately took its toll on Drew who said, "I can't breathe. My back hurts. My feet hurt from driving. I tried my hardest. It's all I can ask. Kevin stepped up and held us together." Kevin noted, "We came into this as a team. If I were hurting he would certainly pick up the slack for me. I'll look back on this as a great opportunity. I wouldn't have passed it up for the world, but it's bittersweet."
