SNOW PATROL
Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 12:02am, best friends Oswald & Danny discovered they had to take a taxi to the base of Martial Mountain chain, ride a chair lift, and hike half a mile to Martial Glacier. Once there, they had to use an avalanche beacon to search the glacier for another beacon buried in the snow with their next clue.
At 8:00am the following morning, the chair lift to Martial Glacier began operation with life partners Joe & Bill at the front of the line in their matching embroidered winter wear. Taking the extra effort to be first paid off as the pair quickly used their beacon to locate the buried clue before most of the other Teams even reached the glacier. Opening it, Joe & Bill learned they would by flying over 7,000 miles to the southeast African city of Maputo, Mozambique. Teams needed to book tickets at a travel agency because travelers cannot book international flights at Ushuaia airport. Since departing flights from Ushuaia airport were limited, Teams were provided with tickets to Maputo scheduled to arrive at 3:00pm in case they could not find an earlier flight.
While beauty queens Dustin & Kandice made a huge mistake in forgetting to pick up their beacon before the long hike to the glacier putting them in last place, best friends Oswald & Danny struggled to locate one of the buried clues. When the signal indicated they were near a buried beacon, their beacon would suddenly pick up a new, different signal from somewhere else. The pair became testy with one another as Danny questioned Oswald's ability to use the beacon when they lost the signal altogether. Their situation worsened when Dustin & Kandice returned to the glacier with a beacon in hand and proceeded to find their clue putting Danny & Oswald in last place. After the pair finally located the buried beacon, they had a sense of humor about it, joking, "If you get caught in an avalanche, never come look for Danny & Oswald to get you out." In the end, the best friends' fumbling on the glacier did no harm as all Teams booked the same flight to Maputo.
JUST KIDDING
Landing in Maputo, Mozambique, Teams had to choose a marked car with a driver and travel 45 miles to the Apopo Training Field where they would find their next clue. On the ride to the training field, Eric decided to play a joke on Joe & Bill by having his driver pretend to pass the Guidos. This joke elicited the panicked response in the Guidos that Eric expected as the pair pleaded with their driver to speed up to avoid being passed. On the Guidos, Eric & Danielle commented, "We like making fun of the Guidos. They're just so annoying."
With the gate to the training field closed, Joe & Bill took a moment to confront their tormentor, Eric, warning him to watch his speed. When Eric explained that he was simply playing a joke on them, Joe snidely retorted, "You need to watch your jokes, guy." When Bill tried to make amends for Joe's outburst, Eric said, " You guys are just being freaks." Walking away from the situation, a stunned Bill said, "Peace, peace, peace", prompting Eric's retort of, "Freaks, freaks, freaks." Danielle noted, "The Guidos are bipolar. They're totally nuts." In their defense, Bill commented, "Joe and I are not going to allow negativity to come in our way. We're going to stay positive."
YOU DIRTY RAT
When the gates to the training field opened, Uchenna & Joyce led the Teams to the cluebox to find a Roadblock. In this Roadblock, one team member had to use a rat to find a race marker above a deactivated mine. In this country, once overrun by Guerilla warfare, trained rats actually save lives on a daily basis by locating leftover land mines. Once their rat gave the signal that it found something, an Apopo Mine Technician would search the area. When the Race marker was found the Team would receive their clue.
After being attached to a tiny leash that connected to a rope, the rats began their search by sniffing along the ground for a landmine buried underneath. Uchenna explained, "He's sniffing along the path. We go back and forth a few times. Each time the rat would cross the path I had to pull it along. He didn't do the signal, just keep moving him along." Soon, Joe's rat, Nelson, stopped and began furrowing in the ground, prompting Joe to call over the mine technician. Almost instantly, the buzzer of the mine detector went wild signaling that Joe had found the race marker. Opening their clue, the couple discovered they had to travel with their driver 50 miles back to Maputo and find Praca dos Trabalhadores, a building designed by renowned architect Gustave Eiffel.
COLOR OR COAL?
Arriving at Praca dos Trabalhadores in first place, life partners Joe & Bill encountered a Detour having to choose between Pamper and Porter. In Pamper, teams had to travel half a mile to the Maputo Central Market, choose a nail polish kit and convince people to pay them to paint their nails, which in Maputo is a job usually performed by men. Teams needed to earn at least 30 metecais, about one U.S. dollar, to receive their next clue. In Porter, Teams made their way two miles to Market de Janet, where they would use their bare hands to fill 10 large 45-pound bags with coal, and sew each of them shut. Then, Teams had to carry one of the ten heavy bags to a specified address where the owner would hand them their next clue.
Believing incorrectly that men would look strange painting nails, Joe & Bill drove off to the significantly more physical task of filling bags of coal followed by best friends Oswald & Danny. As the Teams' hands turned black from the coal, cousins Charla & Mirna, who left the Roadblock in last place, arrived at Praca dos Trabalhadores in third place when the other four Teams became lost in the city. The two ladies had no interest in bagging coal and instead, armed with a rainbow of nail polish colors, started imploring the local men and women of Maputo for a bargain manicure. Charla & Mirna performed the task so well that they didn't even realize they had the required 30 metecais until a local counted the currency for them. Opening their clue, the cousins learned they had to travel to the Pit Stop at Fortaleza, a fort completed in 1781 that is the oldest building in Maputo.
NUMBER ONE
Stepping onto the mat in first place, the very ecstatic Charla & Mirna received the good news from Phil that they had won a trip for two from Travelocity to Aruba. On their first victory in either season on the race, Mirna stated, "Just because someone's a little shorter or a little skinnier doesn't really matter. We work hard and we're a d**n good team and if coming in first lets people have a little more respect for us then that's a wonderful thing to accomplish."
With beauty queens Dustin & Kandice and married parents Teri & Ian wisely painting nails to claim second and third place respectively, the remaining four Teams struggled at the very large piles of coal to fill the ten required bags and sew them shut. Oswald & Danny beat the Guidos sewing the bags, joking, "We're younger. We're faster. We'll always beat them." The pair didn't live up to their promise however when Joe & Bill narrowly edged out the best friends in delivering one of the bags to the specified address.
As the Guidos and Joe & Bill returned to the cars, married couple Uchenna & Joyce and dating couple Eric & Danielle battled for last place. Uchenna & Joyce had a miniscule lead on Eric & Danielle by sewing the ten bags first, but they lost it when they couldn't locate the house to deliver their bag of coal. Employing the services of some local children, Eric & Danielle successfully delivered their bag first, but Uchenna & Joyce remained hot on their heels by finding their house moments later.
RACE TO THE MAT
After Oswald & Danny claimed fourth place, life partners Joe & Bill ran into some trouble when the taxi driver they hired to lead them to the Pit Stop had difficulties finding the fort. This allowed dating couple Eric & Danielle to show up at the entrance to the fort at the exact same as the Guidos resulting in a spirited footrace won by Joe & Bill. Joe commented, "Eric & Danielle are kind of like competing in a footrace with Olympic athletes but we outran them." A disappointed Eric remarked, "I think we should've beat them. The Guidos remind me of old women who are past their prime. She got beat by a bunch of queens."
Stepping onto the mat in last place, a thrilled Uchenna & Joyce received the very good news that this was the first non-elimination leg of the race. While the threat of elimination now hung over their heads with a 30-minute penalty assessed if they don't win the next leg, they still counted their blessings to still be running the race. Uchenna said, "I don't like being in this position. We need to rock and roll. We just have to keep our intention right and stay forward." Joyce added, "Given the competitive people here thirty minutes could be pretty disastrous so we're gonna work like hell the next leg to come in first. We certainly can make miracles happen. We did on the last race."
