AN EARLY LEAD
Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 4:20am, cousins Charla & Mirna discovered they needed to fly over 5,000 miles to Warsaw, Poland and make their way to Czapski Palace, Frederic Chopin's childhood home. Since flights to Warsaw were limited, Teams were provided with tickets on a flight that would arrive at 11:25am the next day. However, they were under no obligation to use the tickets.
Charla & Mirna, best friends Oswald & Danny, and beauty queens Dustin & Kandice all congregated at the travel agency waiting for the agency's 8:30am opening while married couple Uchenna & Joyce opted to camp out at a South African Airways office that also opened at 8:30am. As they waited, Uchenna & Joyce tried calling the travel agency that just opened its doors with the other three Teams present; however the Teams quickly put an end to the phone call over Uchenna's pleas for assistance.
Two agents assisted Teams in the travel agency as they searched for better flights than the one provided to them. While cousins Charla & Mirna monopolized one agent with co-conspirators Oswald & Danny, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice had another to themselves. The beauty queens bested the other two Teams by snagging the last two tickets on a flight connecting through Addis Ababa and Frankfurt landing at 9:10am. At South African Airways, Uchenna & Joyce booked the same connection through Frankfurt landing in Warsaw at 9:10am, but the couple needed to pick up the tickets at the Frankfurt Airport to make the flight. Oswald & Danny and Charla & Mirna eventually found a flight through Amsterdam landing in Warsaw at 9:45am while the Guidos and Eric & Danielle settled for the tickets provided to remain in last place together.
WAY BEHIND... AGAIN
Landing in Kilamanjaro, Tanzania, Eric & Danielle and Joe & Bill tried to pick up tickets for their connecting flights to Amsterdam and Warsaw, but an agent told them they were too late to board the flight. Faced with the nightmare of once again being over 12 hours behind, the two Teams begged and pleaded as the plane stood on the tarmac waiting to fly away without them. In a fit of panic and rage after being denied entry, Joe ran out to the tarmac shouting for the plane and ringing a bell as Bill wisely noted, "I think he's lost it." When they calmed down, the two Teams made a gentleman's agreement to meet the next morning and book the same 6:30am flight to Warsaw choosing to battle each other in Poland instead of the airport.
In Frankfurt, married couple Uchenna & Joyce had problems of their own as they missed their connecting flight to Warsaw because they couldn't pick up their tickets in time. This meant Dustin & Kandice pulled ahead as the only Team on the flight to Warsaw landing at 9:10am.
ALONE IN FIRST
Touching down at 9:07am, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice arrived at Czapski Palace to find a Detour having to choose between Perfect Pitch and Perfect Angle. In Perfect Pitch, Teams had to make their way three-quarters of a mile to the Prymas Palace and choose a grand piano. Then, they needed to use the provided tools to tune one key of the keyboard. Once the concert pianist played a piece of Chopin's music and determined that their piano was in tune, he would hand them their next clue. In Perfect Angle, Teams made their way approximately half a mile to the Escada Boutique to pick up a mannequin and carry it another 400 yards to the Panoramik Laboratory. Once there, Teams had to use an x-ray machine to locate a clue imbedded somewhere inside their mannequin which needed to be positioned at a very specific angle for the image to capture the name of their next destination.
Having played piano since age six, Dustin felt confident in her ability to tune a piano. On the task, Dustin commented, "For each key that you push, there's actually three strings that connect to it, so is it the right one, is it the left one, or is it the middle? And which way based on that you turn the tool." The beauty queens proved very adept at tuning the off-key note and received their next clue instructing them to travel to Jan III Sobieski Lazienki, a monument honoring a king of Poland.
Arriving at the monument in first place, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice opened their next clue instructing them to search the palace grounds for the next Pit Stop. After the beauty queens stepped on the mat in first place, Phil informed the excited duo they had won a trip for two from Travelocity to Puerto Rico.
As best friends Oswald & Danny began the piano tuning with mixed results, cousins Charla & Mirna felt very alone in a city that didn't speak much English. Unable to find Czapski Palace, they continued to ask locals who would not answer them. Mirna commented, "They would always run away from us. It's like we're the plague or something." After finally receiving directions from a hotel concierge, the cousins found the palace and chose to tune the piano as well.
As married couple Uchenna & Joyce landed in Warsaw, Oswald & Danny broke a piano string in their tuning endeavor while Charla & Mirna had little clue of how to use the provided tools. After spending an hour in vain, the cousins decided to throw in the towel on the task while Oswald & Danny soldiered on to finally tune it giving them a second place finish for the leg.
While Uchenna & Joyce quickly tuned their piano to finish in third place, cousins Charla & Mirna continued to flounder as they struggled to carry the cumbersome mannequin through the streets of Warsaw. To make matters worse, then again encountered locals who wouldn't help them until they finally found a young English-speaking girl who directed them to the laboratory. After taking the x-ray that revealed the clue, the cousins checked into the Pit Stop in fourth place.
THE NEXT LEG
In a first for the Race, just as Eric & Danielle and Joe & Bill landed in Warsaw, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice began the eighth leg of the Race at 10:54pm. Opening their clue, the duo learned they would be traveling over 150 miles to the infamous concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau where over one million people were killed in the Nazi Genocide. To get to Auschwitz, Teams would take one of two charter buses leaving at 1:00pm and 5:00pm.
NOT OVER YET
Facing potential elimination, Eric & Danielle raced in their taxi against the Guidos, but both Teams arrived together in the darkness at Czapski Palace where they chose different Detour options. As Eric & Danielle struggled to tune their piano, the Guidos picked up a "hunky" male mannequin and transported it to the laboratory. Eric broke a string forcing the pair to wait for a professional to fix it before they could continue tuning. The couple's only saving grace was that the Guidos couldn't find the clue in their mannequin after several x-rays. In the end, Eric & Danielle completed the task ahead of the Guidos to barley claim fifth place.
Stepping onto the mat in last place, Joe & Bill expected the worst, but instead received a pardon from Phil as this was the second non-elimination leg. On their dire situation, Joe commented, "On AMAZING RACE one, we were nineteen hours behind everybody else and we never caught up to them. It's certainly hard trying to think that you could actually win it."
FALLING APART?
After the first bus carrying Uchenna & Joyce, Dustin & Kandice, and Oswald & Danny left for Auschwitz, dating couple Eric & Danielle departed the Pit Start and began bickering almost instantly over money when Danielle wanted to buy coffee over Eric's protestations. An incredulous Danielle said, "I have to feel guilty about getting a cup of coffee. That's sick." Not wanting to continue a fight over this, Eric kept asking for Danielle to "shut up." Danielle finally stalked off, sniping, "You make this whole situation more miserable than it has to be. You make it so unenjoyable." Eric simply replied, "Don't worry. It won't last much longer."
PAYING TRIBUTE
Pulling into Auschwitz, the Teams all felt the gravity and importance of the moment. As each Racer lit a memorial candle on the railroad tracks, they reflected on the horror that took place here. Dustin commented, "Just being there on those tracks your imagination just rolls. People being unloaded like cattle. That's the last time a lot of them saw each other." Uchenna added, "What came to mind was all the books that never got written. All the ideas that were never tried. Generations were murdered. You can't forget that. God forbid it should ever happen again." Afterwards, in a taxi heading to Krakow, Cuban immigrant Oswald became very emotional and teary, saying, "It reminds you where I could have ended up living. It makes me very grateful to be out of there where I don't have to worry about expressing who I am as a person."
PAIRED OFF
Arriving at Teatr im Julusza together, married couple Uchenna & Joyce and best friends Oswald & Danny found an Intersection where two Teams must perform tasks and make decisions together until further notice. With the beauty queens in a lost taxi, the two Teams made the very easy decision to pair up, opting to try for the Fast Forward award. In this Fast Forward, the newly joined Teams made their way a quarter mile to Market Square where they had to climb the Fire Guard Tower of St. Mary's Church and the Town Hall Tower. As they climbed, they had to count the stairs and calculate the total number of steps in both towers.
As the beauty queens arrived at the Intersection to realize in shock they would be waiting four hours for the next bus to arrive, Uchenna & Joyce and Oswald & Danny began climbing the steps of the towers. While they agreed on 111 steps for the Town Hall Tower, three of them counted different numbers at St. Mary's Church. Uchenna became the deciding vote and his number matched Oswald's at 348. This guess proved correct and the two Teams made their way to the Pit Stop at Pieskowa Skala Castle. While the Teams jumped on the mat together, Oswald & Danny chose to give the prize, a Travelocity trip for two to St. Lucia, to Uchenna & Joyce. Oswald jokes, "We won't be giving away a million dollars though."
Arriving at Auschwitz, Teams on the second bus had an equally emotional reaction to the concentration camp. Mirna commented, "Our own ancestry, Armenians, went through a genocide. Four million Armenians were massacred at the hands of the Turks so it's just so personal to us" Afterwards, in their taxi to Krakow, a tearful Bill said, "There were people like Joe and I that weren't allowed to express themselves as we are now. It's unbelievable how one man can treat another man in just horrible ways."
THE WAITING ENDS
After having plenty of time to think about their situation, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice hoped most to work with the Guidos at the Intersection and least with Charla & Mirna. Waiting in anticipation, the beauty queens' faces fell when the cousins appeared first out of their taxi with the Guidos and Eric & Danielle nowhere in sight. Instead of wasting more time, Dustin & Kandice called Charla & Mirna over and read the Detour options, Eat It Up and Roll It Out. In Eat It Up, the joined Teams would make their way one and a half miles to an old market. Once there, each Team member had to use traditional methods to make one three-inch length of Polish Kielbasa sausage. After finishing, the Teams would be served eight feet of cooked Kielbasa. Once each person ate two feet of sausage, the Teams would receive their next clue. In Roll It Out, the joined Teams made their way one and a half miles to the J. Mazurek bakery and properly roll out twenty bagels. When finished, they would make their way on foot one quarter of a mile to a nearby restaurant with a delivery of fresh bagels for the headwaiter.
TOUGH TO SWALLOW
As the beauty queens and cousins began making their sausage links, the other unlikely pair of Eric & Danielle and Joe & Bill searched the Jewish Quarter for the J. Masurek bakery. Not having any success and feeling time slipping away, the two Teams agreed to switch and headed to the old market where Charla & Mirna and Dustin & Kandice sat down to begin eating two feet of sausage each. After saying a prayer, the four women took their first bite of sausage with the beauty queens already trying to encourage the hesitant cousins. When Joe & Bill and Eric & Danielle arrived, a worried Charla said, "Okay, pressure's on, guys."
When Joe & Bill began eating the sausage with Eric & Danielle, Joe noted, "We came here worried about Dani. Now I'm more worried about Eric. Bill and I are the ones with the thirty-minute penalty so we got to keep this process moving. Pretty much, we're at their mercy." With the threat of elimination over his head, Joe performed exceptionally well as he became the first person done with his two feet of sausage. Kandice finished soon after along with Dustin who punctuated her finale by vomiting it all up. Not missing a chance for a joke, Eric quipped, "Ladies and gentlemen, Miss California!"
After Bill and Mirna devoured the remnants of their sausages, the Race boiled down to Eric & Danielle versus Charla. Charla tried her very best by stuffing every last bit of sausage into her mouth before swallowing, but Eric & Danielle's method of smaller bites paid off as their finished first. Opening their next clue, Joe & Bill and Eric & Danielle learned they needed to drive over 20 miles to the town of Skala and find the Pieskowa Skala Castle.
IT'S HARD BEING MIRNA
Only moments behind, Dustin & Kandice and Charla & Mirna took the lead to the parking lot when Joe & Bill and Eric & Danielle misread their clue before following the other Teams to the marked cars. The beauty queens breathed a sigh of relief by getting on the road first while Mirna couldn't disable the parking brake putting them in last place. Their situation worsened when the taxi driver she employed to follow to Skala used another taxi driver to help. Not wanting to pay two taxis, she argued with them on the side of the road even crying, "Have a little bit of sympathy as a human being! We are here at two in the morning!" Mirna's hysterics managed to reduce her taxi fare from one hundred dollars to fifty and they continued on their way. When their taxi driver stopped again to confirm the location on the clue, Mirna began berating Charla for not having the clue readily available, snapping, "Am I supposed to do everything?" The verbal barrage continued until Charla finally stood her ground, responding, "Can you yell a little more on me? Is it not enough?"
A WILD KNIGHT
Arriving at Pieskowa Skala Castle in third place, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice discovered a Roadblock. In this Roadblock, one Team member had to don a full suit of authentic medieval armor and lead a horse half a mile through the forest to the castle gates. Once at the castle, they had to deliver the horse to the stable boy, enter the courtyard and search for the Pit Stop.
As Dustin began suiting up feeling like a "tin bucket", cousins Charla & Mirna arrived at the castle next because Eric & Danielle and Joe & Bill became briefly lost in the town of Skala. After being told in the car by Mirna how she has contributed so little, Charla felt the need to step up and don her suit of armor. Looking at the very large horse she would have to lead, Charla became very concerned for her safety, saying, "The horse could trample over me. God help us."
As Dustin & Kandice claimed third place, Charla struggled to walk in the heavy armor. Not having a proper guide, her horse became confused walking in circles around the helpless Charla. A panicked Mirna saw the last two Teams arrive at the castle as Bill and Eric began putting on their armor. Trying to encourage Charla, Mirna tried shouting out suggestions of walking in a straight line and then threatening, "Do you want the other Teams to pass us?" The stress of the situation worsened for Charla who begged of her horse, "Please don't kill me." After taking a nasty fall face first, Charla burst into tears but got back up and kept walking. Even after falling down a second time, Charla's persistence ultimately paid off as she beat Eric and Bill to the mat to finish in fourth place.
ELIMINATED
While Joe & Bill stepped onto the mat in fifth place, their 30-minute penalty from the previous leg proved too large to overcome as Eric & Danielle appeared a minute later. A teary Bill commented, "In our life, I can't think of a time when we've really had more fun together. It's been great!" Joe added, "I think we can walk away with our heads held high and be proud of ourselves. It has been a wonderful, life-altering experience once again. I've had a knight in shining armor for twenty years now. Life is supposed to be enjoyed. You're supposed to surround yourself with love and happiness and I think Bill and I have done that. It's really wonderful."
