Quick Fire Challenge.” In this event, they’re going to be making an appetizer to go with the Bombay Sapphire thingytails that they choose from a table before them. The competition is all about “marrying flavors” and the judge is a Mr. Walker who knows this line and what he expects. Anyway, the chefs start complaining and saying the challenge is hard. Each have a unique taste in their drink like chocolate and mint or raspberry mint. The chefs seem not to be familiar with this product so maybe it will be good.
Again, I’m as disappointed as the judge appears to be. They have gone the way they usually go – sea bass, scallop – at least one tried watermelon and French toast. Casey wins with her French toast baquette. I’ll have to take their word for it that it was good. It looked okay on the plate but I honestly thought that it looked a little burnt.
Next is the elimination challenge – oh, good some drama. Boy was I wrong. The chefs are asked to divide into teams of three, choose one ingredient, and come up with three dishes using the same ingredient for an exclusive, medal wearing dining club. This group can’t even make it interesting picking team! After first picking then shifting, the teams are:
1st course: Hung, Brian, Lia
2nd course: Casey, Joey, Howie
3rd course: Sara N., CJ, and Tre
4th course: Sara M. Camille, and Dale.
Each meet to discuss different aspects of their course. Now for some drama – especially with the Casey, Joey, Howie team – NOT! Since Casey has immunity and the guys are railroading the show, she just sits there and listens. Of course, Joey and Howie, who I had hoped to be at each other’s throats, team up against her for being uncooperative since she has immunity.
The next day, the teams head out to the Fresh Market with $150 and 30 minutes to show. The money issue is going to be bad! Dale and his team have decided to do a dessert and go looking for pineapple. Most of the teams have to make adjustments with their meat – what they originally planned to use will be too expensive. Hung, Brian and Howie decide to go with shrimp. Casey, Joey and Howie had planned to do duck but instead have fallen back to tuna. Sara N., CJ, and Tre go with beef while Dale’s team chose to do a dessert. That may not help them in the end. They return to the kitchen and have two hours to cook.
Tom checks in and you can see by the semi-expression on his face that he doesn’t get what some of the groups are doing – especially Dale. After walking through, he goes back out and the cooks rush to get their dishes finished.
The supper club arrive with their medals evident and their sophisticated palates ready to be thirlled. They sit down and the chefs present their food. First up is Hung, Brian and Lia who with their shrimp dishes. Everyone seems to enjoy them and the second group of Casey, Howie, and Joey enter. Their dishes are not as well liked. In fact Casey’s doesn’t seem to have been seasoned appropriately. Next up is the beef dishes of Tre, Sara N., and C. J. They appear to be better liked and presentation is good. They did think the second dish (and I don’t remember whose that was) looked like something from Denny’s. Last comes Dale’s group with the pineapple dessert and it is a disaster. Well, Tom’s face had told us to expect this, didn’t it!
At the Judge’s Table, it is agreed that Hung, Lia, and Brian had the best food. They are brought out and complimented. Hung thinks he has won but no – Lia gets name the best cook. They are directed to send out the tuna and dessert courses. These two groups are labeled the least favorite (don’t you love how they don’t say worse)!
The dessert dish is addressed first. Dale and company are told it was a hodge podge of flavors and textures and that it was just “not there.” Tom asks the chefs why they did something they weren’t familiar with and they all basically said to stretch ourselves. Come on – just tell the truth. Dale forced it on you. Then they turn to the tuna dish. Casey’s dish was weak because of the seasoning and the other two let her down by not tasting it. Howie’s wasn’t much better. Casey feels that the judges are making her feel guilty because she has immunity and she wasn’t worthy. If she hadn’t had immunity, she would be the one to leave because hers was the worse. At least Casey said it to Tom and company’s faces!
After discussion, the judges call them back and rake Joey and Howie over the coals for not tasting Casey’s dish. Howie is told his was almost as bad and they basically need to communicate more. Dale admits to choosing the pineapple but it is Camille who is sent home and Dale is put on a guilt trip.
