As the program starts we get the usual recap and see the chefs as they start their new day. Joey and Dale are having a talk on the patio. Hung is preparing to get on his game.
The “Quick Challenge” will be with Chef Maria Frumkin, owner of a famous café which features pastry items. Today the chef must make something from a frozen pie crust. Hung looks surprised and stun while Dale is upset since he got hasseled over using instant mash potatoes. The contestan chefs are told to make the most ambitious dish they can from the frozen pie crust. They have, I think, an hour to do this challenge.
Hung decides immediately to use bananas and chocolate while Dale looks to make a salmon tart. Howie wants savory flavors. Hung is definitely having problems. He can’t get his mousse to set up and there is only 30 minutes left. Tre is using apples in his tart and problems continue for Hung. He decides to go to Plan B. It’s still a mousse but not what he intended.
The judge tastes all the dishes. Many of the chefs, like C. J. has done something unusual (duck lollipop and duck tart with cabbage). Tre’s fennel and apple tart looks beautiful and elegant on the plate. Brian has done 4 tarts (one vegan (finally), one seafood, one choreyo, and one fruit). They did question why he felt the need to do 4. Sara M. uses rabbit in her dish while Lia did pork tenderloin. Dale has thought summer and one one spinach and salmon and one strawberry pecan saffron tart.
Chef Frumkin does not like Lia’s artichocks, Dale’s concoction (saffron overwhelming), or Hung’s chocolate. Her favorites are Tre’s simple and elegant dish, Sara M.’s cheese tart, and Joey’s very rich dessert. Joey wins the competition and immunity.
Now it is time to turn to the “Elimination Challenge”. The chefs will be cooking for 20 members of the cast and crew of the Spanish telenovela Dame Chocolate. They will do Latin dishes. Each will be given 30 minutes to shop and three hours to prepare the meals. They will have $125 to spend on their dishes.
While they are back at their rooms, we learn that Casey and Lia have become friends – ahh!
Each approach their purchases the next day with a sense of urgency. Howie has decided to do a complicated dish which will need three hours. After returning to the kitchen, Tom enters and tells the chefs that the telenovela people have called and they have pushed up the luncheon. Instead of three hours, they have one and a half to prepare the food. He leaves saying: “Sorry about that!”
The kitchen becomes dangerous as the cooks try to get their dishes together and are in each other’s way. It’s an accident waiting to happen and the one who is being the most dangerous in my book is Hung. Sara N. tells us she is glad she bought tortillas yesterday. She was afraid she wouldn’t have time to hand make hers.
Tom arrives back to check on the progress. He seems a little worried about how fast Hung is moving. Tom is especially worried when he seens Hung almost cut Casey with a knife. When he goes by Howie’s station, he questioned the use of roasted pork. Howie tells him he has it under control. Tom leaves as time starts to dwindle. Casey realizes that her rice is almost ruined but has no other option but to use it.
The chefs head to the gorgeous set of Dame Chocolate on Star Island. Each set up their dish in the most attractive presentation they can devise. As the cast and crew start filling their plates, Hung tries to pile up the brownie points by addressing them in Spanish. The cast and crew laugh and joke about it, but move quickly one. Of course the other chefs note it and are a little annoyed.
The cast and crew seem to like Howie’s dish the most. Hung’s dish is not popular and is not really original in their book. Joey’s dish has good chorizo. Their least favorite dishes include Sara N.’s dish which does not have enough fish, Lia’s trout which they do not even touch, and Casey’s sauce which contains too much coffee.
At the “Judges’ Table,” Tom tells the rest what happened in the kitchen when the time got cut. He is annoyed with the unprofessional behavior of Hung and his smugness. The guest chef had also noticed his bad behavior and superiority complex at the Quick Challenge and adds that to the discussion.
The judges call for Joey and Howie to come face them. These two have had the best dishes of the competition. Joey is asked if he ever made his dish before. He is honest and replies that he has seen it made but had never done it himself. He wanted his to be different and have his own style. Howie admits that he thought he was in trouble. He is congratulated and told that the flavors are “spot on.” Joey tells them that he loved Howie’s dish and Howie returns the favor. Howie should! He had been sampling Joey’s dish at the competition!
The winner is Howie who gets a bottle of win from Argentina. When they return to the kitchen waiting area, he gives the win to Joey. They must have finally buried the hatchet.
Next up are the bottom four: Lia, Sara N., Casey, and, surprisingly to him, Hung! They are told that they had the least successful dishes. Hung’s dish was very traditional and had nothing unique about it. In fact, they seem to have hated the seasoning. Tom also informs him that he must be more careful for he almost cut Casey. Casey is informed that the problem for her was her rice and sauce. While the cast and crew may not have liked it, Casey thought it tasted fine. Tom informs her that he wasn’t sure if it was “Latin.” Lia’s dish was not traditional and probably was the least Latin dish offered that day. She tells the judges she wasn’t surprised to be in the bottom tier. Sara N. is the final least favorite. She is told that she masked the scallops too much. They are sent back while the judges discuss the situation again.
The judges again pick on Hung. In their opinion, he thinks too highly of himself and is arrogant. This attitude is upsetting to the judges. Sara N. dish was not a dish but chips and dish. Lia’s dish was bland with a decided lack of texture. She was definite confused and had no background to draw on. Casey’s rice was overcooked and the sauce overpowered everything. Tom notes that the challenge was on timing. They ask the cooks to return and Lia is sent home due to the blandness of her dish.
