Tonight’s episode opens with nine chefs remaining. In the rooms, you can tell they miss Joey and the tension is rising. I found especially comical Howie’s remark about his friendship with Joey. It wasn’t too long ago that they were in a head to head argument.
Ice Cream!!! The Quick Challenged involved Coldstone Ice Cream and the guest judge for the week is Govind Armstong, an author and owner of some fairly exclusive night clubs/restaurants. The chefs must make a sweet mix to go with the Coldstone Ice Cream. They are given 45 minutes and the clock begins ticking.
There are some strange mixtures being concocted by these chefs. Dale’s seems the best in theory – peach cobbler – and is the ultimate winner. Hung is going overboard looking at textures. Seven different flavors all mixed together would scare me! Casey is making a sauce that eventually makes the guest judge shudder. Tre’s raspberry ginger sauce looks interesting. When Armstrong speaks, we find that Hung and Casey are in the bottom two. Hung’s and Casey’s sauces seemed to have too much going on. The favorites are Dale’s and Howie’s. Dale wins the competition and is excused from the Elimination Challenge.
The remaining chefs are greeted with the information that they will be enjoying Miami’s night life. While they are dressing up to go partying, I think back on other challenges and realize that something isn’t quite right. This group doesn’t appear to be as suspicious as I am. They leave the suite and go to the waiting Hummer limousine. They’re talking about clubbing and where to go and put up only to see Padma and Armstrong waiting for them. They do have a challenge! They are to prepare food for the late night clubbers. Each will be given a mobile kitchen, 15 minutes to make plans and get familiar with the kitchen, 30 minutes to shop at Fresh Market, and $300 for supplies. Dale gets the night off and will enjoy a meal with Armstrong. You can see the frustration in the faces of the others.
They pick knives for teams. The orange team is composed of Howie, Sara N, Casey, and CJ. The black team has Hung, Sara, Brian, and Tre. When they return from Fresh Market, you can see Brian is into this competition. He even realizes that the cramp quarters will make it difficult and has found a way to work with that. There’s not much chatter from the Orange team and Howie seems to be running the show. Wait, I thought that was CJ’s job. Tom stops by to check on the progress and actually things that Orange has the best menu.
The crowd of hungry folks starts to arrive. It’s very obvious very early that Brian is the go-getter. He’s working the crowd who are all around the Black’s teams mobile kitchen and seem to be enjoying the food. Everyone gets served promptly which is in sharp contrast to the Orange kitchen. Food is slow – even Tom has to wait. Also, Orange runs out of milkshake. Later Tom will tell the judge who didn’t get to sample it that that was a blessing for him.
After service is finished, we head to the judges table. Sara N. has had a bad night – it shows in her attitude and her lackluster performance. The judges meet and call the Black team in first. They’ve won the competition and Tre’s grits are what has won the ultimate prize of books by the guest judge and a VIP pass to all of his clubs around the world.
Next, it is the orange team’s turn. Sara N., CJ, Howie and Casey are called before the judge’s table. Sara N. tells them she felt the competition was demoralizing and that she was out of her element. Casey voices the same concern in her way by saying she wouldn’t have dressed like she did if she knew she was going to be cooking. Howie is called on his Cuban sandwich and he tells the judges he didn’t have the necessary press. Sara is told her burgers didn’t have enough seasoning. The entire team is faced with accusations of no group dynamics and the lack of communication. CJ is asked why he took no leadership. Howie attacks Sara and calls her the baby.
The team is sent back while the judges deliberate. They discuss their weaknesses and realize that Casey and CJ are not as much to blame as Howie and Sara N. Sara had problems from the beginning and Howie is unable to compromise. When the team returns, the judges let them know that the choice came down to Howie and Sara N. Sara N. is told to pack her knives and go.
