Episode 12 - Poor Judd is Daid
I'm still on the Rafe train. Watching the review of last week's episode reminds me again of how much I like him, his game play, his real joy at being there. I don't think he misses a thing and I am so rooting for him now. This self described "little gay mormon" is playing a great game in my opinion.
Danni is well aware that she is the target this week. There are six people left...5 of the original alliance of 6 and Danni. Lydia claims she smelled sausage and eggs when she woke up? Danni says everyone is avoiding talking about the stuff exposed at tribal last night. She feels that Lydia is still enough of an outsider to maybe pull her into an alliance.
Everyone practices cartwheels and cheerleader moves. Judd actually does a pretty decent cartwheel. Danni's weight loss is really really evident.
Reward challenge is an auction...they have 500 dollars to spend. First thing is Beef Jerky....Danni gets it for just 20 dollars. Next we have three chocolate chip cookies and a tall glass of milk. Cindy gets that for 40 dollars. This is the lowest bidding auction in survivor history I think. A mosquito net is up next and Lydia wins it at 140 dollars. A mystery item goes for 180 dollars to Danni and Rafe...and it's HUGE steak sandwich and fries. The next item up for auction is an envelope containing a "huge advantage" in the upcoming immunity challenge. Danni wins it for 200 bucks. Still the bidding was completely timid for all these auctions. I mean, 40 bucks for chocolate chip cookies and milk? She didn't even have to get nekkid or anything.
And then....it's family time. Yeah, yeah, I'm a sucker for the family visit and I tear up just like all of you do....admit it, it gets to you too! Rafe's mother Lonni, Lydia's brother Joseph (who she hasn't seen for two years?), Mindy, Cindy's twin sister, Danni's brother Drew, Steph's boyfriend Michael, and Judd's wife Kristen. An overnight visit with the loved one is up for bid. They can share money, but only the winner gets her loved one. Steph asks Lydia for her money....and she gives it to her. Judd takes all of Cindy's money. Judd wins and embraces his wife. Then Jeff tells him that he may pick two other family members to come to the camp. The three survivors who do not get a loved one visit must go to the old other camp and spend the night there. Judd selects Mindy because without Cindy's money he couldn't have won, and Stephanie's boyfriend Michael because she's his best pal out there. Rafe, Lydia and Danni return to the old campsite to spend the night.
Judd's wife is shocked that Judd can actually do camp things like building a fire and is impressed he knows how to drink the water. I'm guessing she's easily impressed. Cindy and Mindy look a lot alike, but not identical but they seem really happy to be together. Stephanie says that having Michael there is fantastic...she has dated him for 7 years. Steph tells Christa, Judd's wife, that he has been really great out there in the jungle. The three survivors take some time out of the family visit to discuss strategy and who should go next. They are planning to let Danni go home this week as expected, but also realize that they could just as easily dump Lydia. Rafe doesn't seem to be in any danger.
The other group seems cheerful to be at the old Yaxha camp. Rafe describes it as like a homecoming. Danni and Rafe get a chance to talk about who to trust in the game. Rafe says he has real problems with trusting Judd and that Judd is a threat. Rafe likes Danni. He feels closer to her than to Judd. He also realized that Judd sees him as a threat because of his ability in the immunity challenges.
The next morning, the family visitors talk about how amazed they are at the conditions there at camp and how hard it must be for their loved ones to be there. Danni, Lydia and Rafe get back in time to meet and talk to the family visitors. Kristen is still amazed that her city guy husband is able to do this. Judd says having her there is like having 25 white castle cheeseburgers, man. The walk the family members to the boat dock and there are tearful goodbyes....yep, I go misty again. And then they are gone and Stephanie says it was bittersweet, but mostly sweet and that she hates goodbyes and can't wait to say hello.
Judd and Lydia are talking and Danni joins them. Lydia says that they have 7 days left and they are going to have to do something or they will end up on the jury. Judd says he still is unhappy about what happened to Jamie. Lydia and Judd agree that maybe it's time to make a difference. They say all of this in front of Danni...which is like so stupid, I can't believe it.
Immunity challenge is one of those human chess game type things. There is a multi level board covered in tiles. Each person moves by turning over a tile and stepping on it. When a tile is turned over, it can never be used again. The top level spins, so a person can put themselves on the other side of the board by stepping on it and spinning that part around. When you can no longer move (you are surrounded by red tiles that have been turned over) you are out. Danni opens her "advantage" envelope and she has a "switch places with any player" card that she can use at any point in time.
Everyone seems to have their own strategy. Cindy is the first one out. Danni elects to switch at that point with Stephanie. Lydia take a move and is out. Rafe is put out when Danni steps on his only move left. Judd takes his last move and Jeff tells him and he complains that he has one move left. Jeff reminds him you can't move diagonally. Judd is gone. Don't argue with Jeff, Judd, ya putz. Steph makes her last move and Danni wins immunity.
Stephanie opens up a conversation with Danni asking what Judd said to her. Danni fills Stepanie in on everything that Judd and Lydia were talking about when she joined them. She says they were discussing how the strongest had to go first, etc. Stephanie tells the camera that Judd has obviously lied in the game, and Danni hasn't lied. Steph approaches Rafe with the idea of kicking Judd out tonight. Stephanie says she really wants to vote for Lydia, but that even though Judd is her pal, if he's willing to slit her throat then he should go. This is fairly stupid because at this point, the ONLY chance that Judd has to actually hurt Stephanie in the game is tonight...and he will vote Lydia off tonight for certain. He has also been very tight with Steph and will most likely choose her to go to the end in final two if he wins that last challenge.
Judd talks to Steph and Rafe and tells them Lydia is asking him if she's going and he has had to tell her he just doesn't know, it could be any of them. He says privately that he will miss Lydia around camp, but he's glad someone is going home because as long as isn't him it puts a big smile on his face. They make the trip to tribal council.
Jeff asks about the family visits. Steph says now Michael really knows what it's like for her. Danni talks about how thrilled she was to win immunity and how that auction advantage really helped. Cindy talks about voting at this point and how it is difficult because the person you vote out goes to the jury and will decide your fate if you make it to final two. Stephanie says that it is important to vote the person out that is a threat to you, and to be able to explain why you voted them out so that they will understand why you did it when you get to that final tribal council. She says that they have become like family, but that they know they are all in it for the million dollars. Judd decides to be philosophical...which you have to admit it always funny...and talks about how no matter what everyone is saying there, the fact is, they ALL want someone to go home and how every person who goes home gets you closer to the money. He says whoever goes home should think "no hard feelings". As for him, he has to think, well, no hard feelings, you going home is better for me. Everyone else is shown while Judd says all this in voice over as they look sheepish and uncomfortable.
Judd votes for Lidia. Danni votes for Judd. Hope he doesn't have any hard feelings about that. After all, it's better for her, right?
Jeff counts the votes. First vote, Judd. Next vote, Lidia. Another vote Lydia. Another vote Judd. A third vote for Judd. 13th person voted out, Judd.
Judd says, "Thanks guys, I hope you all guys all get bit by a freakin' crocodile. Scumbags!"
Jeff says, "Judd, the tribe has spoken."
Judd mumbles off down the path.
Jeff says the game just made a change in a very big way, can't depend on what went before, yada yada.
I begin singing "Poor Judd is daid" from Oklahoma. My Scott says, "Honey, you are so weird."
I caught up with old Judd on Survivor Live with Jenna Morasca and Dalton Ross the next day. There will be a show on Dec. 12 with the third and fourth place finishers, by the way and a Dec. 13th show with the sold survivor of this season. All this is available at cbs.com.
Judd says that he was miserable at being voted off and meant every word he said. He says he knew all along he would be angry at losing a million dollars. He walked off forgetting his torch until Jeff reminded him to get it. He said he was totally blindsided by Stephanie and would say things to Lydia trying to make her feel better because she knew she was being voted off. It wasn't really that he thought he'd do something with Lydia to change the game, but that he was consoling her and Stephanie should have realized that.
A caller says that Judd reminds her of the John Belushi character in Animal House. She also points out that there has to be some devious behavior to win in Survivor. Judd's not buying it...they were scumbags.
They replay the clip of him saying "No hard feelings, deal with it." Then they show them counting the votes again and his nasty comments. You can hear him saying "Scumbags" as he walks off down the path. Judd says he thinks that "scumbag" is a huge word. I'm not sure what he means...I guess maybe he thinks it's highly meaningful. No doubt, he was totally pissed off then, and still somewhat pissed off now.
Hey, Judd also has a twin brother. Cindy has a twin sister. Was this a survivor twins show? Will next episode be the twins competing? Just a thought.
Judd admits that he has cooled down a little bit since that tribal council but not a lot. He is still pretty angry, and it shows in his demeanor. Someone asks if Danni has lied yet and he's quick to say "she lied, everybody lied." He also says that he actually asked Jeff Probst at one point if he'd like to go a few rounds behind a pyramid. He says Jeff would get angry at them for not being open so he would go ahead and say something to please Jeff. He thinks that the deplorable conditions were responsible for a lot of the anger.
A caller tells Judd that he's a sore loser and that he ruined the great game he played with those final words at tribal council. He is beligerent and keeps saying, what am I supposed to do, give everyone a hug and a kiss. Those people cost me a house. There is no way he will be happy about losing. Plus, they ARE a bunch of scumbags. Judd is so diplomatic. What a guy.
At this point, I have to admit that Survivor Live is almost hard to watch. Judd is being a complete jerk. Jenna Morasca loves it, but she loves any kind of fireworks or drama. Every week they do the "open letter" where the survivor bootee speaks directly to the thing that "cost them the game" and they decide Judd must speak to the wax sealed immunity envelope. He says he wishes he had bid on the item or that Danni had opened it before the challenge to invalidate it.
One good thing...tips have improved for Survivor Judd in his job as a doorman.
The question of advantage for Stephanie and Bobby Jon came up. Jenna doesn't like the idea because they have a second chance (other than allstars) and Judd doesn't like the "home field advantage." Both of them admit, however, that if asked, they would go in a heartbeat. Judd would even let his wife Kristen go...he says everyone would love to see her skinny dippin'. Dang, he's classy.
One interesting point Judd makes is that he never gave a name when he said the strongest needed to go. He says he never even considered trying to get rid of Stephanie. Danni reported this accurately to Stephanie. If Stephanie wasn't positive that she was the strongest, she wouldn't have believed Judd was out to "slit her throat." Plus, Stephanie should have realized that Danni had every reason to try to steer Stephanie into getting rid of Judd. Danni was the next to go. I have to agree with this to a point. Stephanie, as I said earlier, had no reason to fear Judd. Why she believed Danni has more to do with late game paranoia than anything else, I think.
A caller reminds Judd that Bobby Jon told him before he was evicted that Stephanie would stab he and Jamie in the back. Judd looks a little confused. Judd can't seem to wrap his brain around the fact that he was warned about Stephanie and ignored it. What if's are not easy for Judd, obviously. He stumbles a bit around trying to answer, and finally says that Jamie was smarter than he was as if that explains it all.
The next caller tells Judd that the lie about the immunity idol was a deliberate and a MEAN lie. She says that it's spiteful to do that and that she thinks that is why Judd was voted off. Judd explains he was tired and still drunk from the reward the night before. Yeah, it was spiteful, I guess....but mostly it was just dumb. It was a dumb thing to do because someone would find it...and KNOW that he lied. It was dumb because it gave him no advantage at all. Judd gets huffy with the caller and says "oh yeah, I know you could do it all better." He's so charming, how can we not adore him?
Judd's mom called and said she loved him and thought he played an incredible game.
I will give Judd this much...he definitely went further in this game than any really stupid survivor did in the past. But for now, I am starting to get really stuck in that Oklahoma soundtrack and it's time to move on. So, survive well, and I'll see you next week.
I'm still on the Rafe train. Watching the review of last week's episode reminds me again of how much I like him, his game play, his real joy at being there.
