Episode 13 - Can you say "self destruct?"
Last week's vote was a bit of a shock to Cindy, the zookeeper. She had no idea that the alliance
had decided to get rid of Judd, one of their own and keep Danni, the last player left from the pre
merge other tribe. Cindy perceives this as a bit of trend. Judd was shocked when Jamie was
sent packing....and now he is gone. She is shocked when Judd leaves and has to wonder, "am I
next?"
People start jockeying for position as soon as they wake up the next day. Someone noticed that
the only guy left is Rafe. They all admit that the tribe is more fun now that Judd is gone. He was
so serious all the time that they had held back some of their more frivolous sides. Rafe says he's
very close to all of the people left, but he realizes that he could be voted out to leave an all girl
final four.
Mail arrives and it's car keys. It appears the reward will be a car. Stephanie says she has never
had a car of her own and really needs a car. Lydia says she has a friend that is 17 and she
wants to win the car for him.
The challenge is "second chance" events from previous challenges. First they walk a balance
beam untying the throwing club things (matanas?) along the way. The first three to win that part
will move to round two, using the matanas to break a hanging tile. The top two winners of that
portion of the challenge will compete to solve a puzzle. Once the puzzle is solved, the winner will
climb into a cart and chop a rope releasing the cart to roll down an incline into a bunch of red
dirt. First one to do that wins the car, a trip to an archeaologist's dig site, a huge barbecue feast
with rum and a night away from camp.
I think anyone planning on doing survivor should practice untying knots for months before they
go. So many of these challenges require untying something. There are some early falls,
Stephanie and Lydia...and then Rafe. Cindy falls. They go back to the start. Danni is the first
through round one. Cindy follows her and Stephanie is the third. They move on to round two.
The women heave their matanas at the tile and Cindy quickly breaks her tile. Stephanie follows
suit and that leaves the two of them to compete in the puzzle challenge. They use different
strategies, Cindy working the edge and filling in the center, Stephanie trying to work the puzzle
from left to right. Cindy finishes the puzzle well before Stephanie and hops into the cart, chops
the rope and rides down the hill on "the ride of her life" and wins the "ride of her life", a Pontiac
Torrent.
Jeff then explains that she can take one person with her on the trip to the archeaology site. He
then reminds Cindy of the "car curse" of Survivor. No winner of the car has ever gone on to be
the sole survivor. However, Cindy is offered a way to avoid the curse. She can either take her
car, or she can instead forgo her car, and give a car to all four remaining survivors. Thus Rafe,
Danni, Steph and Lydia would ALL get a Torrent, but Cindy would not.
I don't quite get the delimma here. I would have given the others the car. First off, I KNOW that if I
give them all a car, I'm not getting voted out at the next tribal and that puts me squarely into the
final four. If I keep the car, and ignore the silly curse thing, I will be keeping those people from
getting cars, which leaves me vulnerable if I'm not careful. To me there is just no choice here.
Give them all cars. For one thing, I look at it as "win one car...or win four cars that I get to give to
my pals which will provide me with a LOT of goodwill." And I can say I won FOUR CARS. That's
pretty cool. Considering the cash value of the car, it would be the equivalent of moving myself
ahead two spaces in the line up. What I mean by that is that if I win the car and am voted out as
the fifth remaining survivor, the cash value of the car is the equivalent of me not getting voted out
until third. But I am still OUT of the running for the one million, which should always be the primary
goal, especially this late in the game.To me, it's a no brainer. Cindy waffles.
Cindy keeps her car. She says there are no guarantees and she could give them all cars and
then still be voted out the next tribal anyway and then she would have nothing. She chooses
Stephanie to go with her for the food. Everyone claps. As soon as Stephanie and Cindy leave in
the car to go to the food, everyone looks like someone died. Stephanie seems to be completely
thrilled with Cindy's win and the two of them are really excited and happy on the drive to the dig
site. The archaeologist greets them and shows them the piles of food, steak and sausages,
vegetables, rum and a grill to cook on. They talk of the curse of the car, but they poo poo the
idea that it will cost her the game. All through the meal, Cindy keeps feeling somewhat guilty and
keeps talking about how happy she is with her new car.
Back at camp, Danni and Rafe talk about the whole deal with the cars and think like I do, Cindy
was not thinking smart. Only Lydia says she thinks Cindy did the right thing. Rafe says, well, I
know that if she'd given me a car, there is NO WAY I could vote her out at the next tribal council.
The archaeologist, Frederico, came back and told Steph and Cindy all about the Maya culture
and about the archaeology site. Cindy comments that all through it, she would occasionally catch
a glimpse out of the corner of her eye of her car. They have a nice place to sleep with candles
and blankets and mosquito nets. They discuss voting Danni out, because she has made it too
far. They think that Danni is a much bigger threat than Lydia (well, duh).
Cindy returns to camp and proceeds to talk almost non stop about winning a new car, how great
the suspension was, how she never thought she'd have a new car, how much she loves the tail
lights. It begins to wear thin. People kind of stop listening, but Cindy thinks they are all just as
happy for her as she is for herself. Rafe tells Stephanie that he would have not taken the car and
would have given the others the cars. Stephanie is completely amazed. She says she wouldn't
have. General consensus is that if Cindy had given them all cars, she probably would have been
given a car anyway. I think that if Survivor didn't let her have the car, someone, be it Oprah or
Rosie O'Donnell would have given her a car. She messed up as far as I'm concerned. Stephanie
comments that this is the first time in the game that she and Rafe have disagreed.
Immunity is back up for grabs. They all start tied to the end of a rope that is wound around a
bunch of poles. At the poles there are locks to unlock handcuffs and shackles they are wearing.
At the end of the poles, they have to run to a pole that is away from the others with a flag on it
and drop the flag to win. They are still tied to the rope so they must unwind enough rope to be
able to reach the distant post to drop the flag. It's pretty wild, because for at least a time, they are
shackled and must hop over ropes to unwind rope from the poles. Unlocking the locks is
complicated by them having a keyring with a bunch of keys on it and they have to find the right
one to open the locks. Stephanie is the first to try for the distant post but can't reach....there are a
couple of knots in her rope. She undoes the knots and finally after untangling them she reaches
the final post, drops her flag and wins immunity for the very first time in her survivor career.
Everyone is nervous about tribal council. Danni and Rafe talk and say they will NOT vote for
each other no matter what. Danni trusts him. Danni even said she would take Rafe to final two.
Rafe thinks maybe it will be possible to get rid of Cindy. He tells Stephanie that Cindy is by far
the fiecer competitor and well, she did win a car. (Knew that would bite her in the ass.)
Stephanie is a little concerned because Cindy just took her on a reward, and well, she knows
Jamie and Judd are angry with Stephanie for them being voted out. Steph is thinking about jury
votes. Cindy decides that she should try to get them to vote out Rafe. Rafe, the beloved. DUH,
again. She agitates that if Rafe left, it would be an all girl final four. If she wanted to play the sex
card, she should have done it a long time ago.
At tribal, Jeff asks Cindy how she feels about the "curse of the car" now and she says she is
sure she made the right decision. He asks her who the biggest threat on the tribe is and she
says Rafe is the strongest and has won a lot of challenges, so she thinks he's the biggest threat.
They vote. Jeff counts. Cindy is voted out. She says "I'll think about you guys when I see stars
through the sunroof of my new car." Yeah, rub it in Cindy. You lost. You self destructed. You could
have guaranteed yourself a final four position, probably would have gotten a car anyway, and a
real shot at a million dollars. You were silly. You screwed up.
Survivor Live
Jenna Morasca and Dalton Ross have Cindy Hall in the studio to take calls and discuss her
ouster from Survivor. Remember, FINALE is on Sunday night. There will be survivor live
episodes on Monday with no 3 and 4, and Tuesday with the winner and runner-up. Cindy still
thinks her decision about the car was the right one. Dalton says he doesn't think the car would
have given her a free pass, but it would have gotten her further in the game, into the final four.
She's not happy with the things Rafe said about her being selfish and rambling on about the car.
She says he misjudged her character. Jenna points out that Stephanie voted out Judd right after
a reward she got to share and now has voted Cindy out right after a reward she got to share.
Hmmmm.
Cindy says that if she thought it would have kept her around 3 more days, and into the final four
she would have given up the car. Dalton is adamant, taking the car was a bad strategic move.
Unbelievably, Cindy just doesn't get it. She keeps saying there are no guarantees in the game.
She said she chose Stephanie to go on reward to keep Stephanie and Rafe from having time
alone back at camp to plot. She says that Rafe has been the puppet master all along, that
Stephanie is really just the messenger. Rafe calls the shots, Steph tells everyone, and the whole
jury is mad at Stephanie. (Yeah! GO RAFE!)
Cindy says that everyone complained about everything in the enviroment in the jungle, but that
she really loved everything out there, the monkeys, the birds. She felt completely at home the
whole time she was there and that the heat and bugs didn't really bother her. She said she
started watching with Survivor:Outback. She says she thinks of herself as a blend of a couple of
survivors, Rupert (love of animals, joy at being in the environment) and maybe a couple others.
Cindy says Lydia is a hard worker and has a great positive attitude and that makes her pleasant
to be around and since she doesn't ever win challenges, she no threat. Cindy thinks the jury
might find it hard to give her a million dollars at the end because she really didn't play with much
strategy. Jenna says that it's not enough to just have a positive attitude and not offend people.
Rafe has managed to play the game by seeming to be NOT a threat while actually posing a pretty big threat to the others in the final four. Even though he has won many challenges, people seem to perceive him as not being strong. If he ends up in the final two with Stephanie, he has allowed Stephanie to take so much heat from the gang on the jury, he will most likely win.
Danni has managed to come into the tribe and become very powerful by becoming allied with Rafe during the family visits where Rafe and Danni and Lydia ended up alone at the old camp. Cindy points out that a LOT of the strategizing on Survivor happens during a time when some of the others are away from camp. Thus, winning a reward may not be the smartest thing all of the time.
So now, we are down to the final four:
Danni
Lydia (who would have dreamed)
Rafe (GO RAFE!)
Stephanie
I don't think anyone would have predicted these four at the beginning, but here we are and one of these people will win.
Danni - has a pretty good chance. She's smart, and could win an intellectual challenge. For that matter, she's hung in there in the physical stuff as well and we all know that last one will be an endurance challenge. She's still really really emaciated, but basically, she's capable of winning this thing, I think. I don't think she has made too many enemies on the jury as well. In fact, I think she's managed to not get any animosity from anyone.
Lydia - if she lasts to the point where someone can take her to the final two, she might get taken because I think most people think it would be impossible for her to actually win. The only way she will get jury votes is if she is against Stephanie, who has taken all the blame for the jury members who were voted off up to now. People could conceivably vote for Lydia as a vote against Steph. I do not think that she could win against either Rafe or Danni, which makes her a good pick for either one of them if they make the final three.
Rafe - I think he could win. I think he will win against Stephanie or Lydia. The jury could think that he was part of the vote that sent them home, so they might go for Danni if he and Danni were the final two. They might be able to say, Danni didn't betray us, she wasn't part of our alliance, and she survived against those odds.
Stephanie - I don't think she can hope for better than second place.
These are just my opinions, and hey, I could be completely wrong about it. You never know what is going to come out of the jury at the final tribal council. And this year, you have Judd...a huge loose cannon who might say anything. Jamie and Judd feel completely blindsided....they could say anything. Their votes might be completely random.
So, tonight is the night. Someone will win and be Sole Survivor Guatemala.
Last week's vote was a bit of a shock to Cindy, the zookeeper. She had no idea that the alliance
had decided to get rid of Judd, one of their own and keep Danni, the last player left from the pre
