Woo Hoo! It's a recap episode. That allows me the strange fun of writing a recap of a recap. I thought about skipping this week, but well, I don't want to get out of the habit and there were some moments that were fun to remember. So...recapping the recap...and away we go.
We are promised a closer look at the personalities of the players as well as 13 scenes of never before seen footage. For a moment I cringe thinking of the possibilities...Bobby dropping a deuce in the new toilet, Dan's pale white skin gleaming in the moonlight. I make a sound like Sideshow Bob...shudder. By the way, the reason for Dan's pale white skin....found this out on Survivor Live after he got bumped. Apparently he had a bunch of basal cells and some actual skin cancers removed at one time and has been told to avoid sun at all costs. Of course, that's hard to do on Survivor, but he apparently was coated in sun block and wore a shirt during all the challenges, even the water ones in order to avoid more skin cancer.
Next we have a montage. It shows things like, a nighttime campfire "discussion" where everyone tells everyone else they don't like them. Guess which tribe that was (casaya). We see them eating raw fish, we see Courtney and Shane being rude with one another over soap, we see Bruce doing his karate moves (which always looks funny as hell to me for some reason) and we see Shane and Danielle screaming at each other. Gotta love a good montage. (I must mention here that if they are doing a recap show to begin with...why do they have to do a mini recap of the recap of the show they are about to show you? I mean, good grief, I am now recapping the recap of the recap show that is being shown before the recap show actually shows you the actual recap. I'm going to go get a Diet Coke and I'll be back when the real show starts.)
We started out this season with four tribes, Younger Men, Younger Women, Older Men, Older Women. Looking back, it wasn't such a great way to start off. The tribes were two small for any kind of wheeling and dealing to save oneself. Tina fell early victim to this and was voted off the Older Women's tribe mainly because she didn't bond well with the other three members of her tribe whereas she might have fared better with a larger group, especially if some of the less experienced younger men had been there. Tina was one of the best prepared for outdoor living of all the survivor contestants this year and she went home first. Plus, the four tribes thing didn't last long enough to really have any other impact other than showing that the younger men were clueless and to get rid of Tina, who should have lasted longer than some off the others, I think.
The race for the amulets ended with Misty being sent to exile island and they were told about the hidden immunity idol. Our first introduction to the tribes at their camps show the older women starting the fire, the younger men playing rock baseball, and the younger women trying to open a coconut with a machete. Sally managed to do it finally and appeared to enjoy wielding the big blade because she said her favorite part on a construction job she used to work was demolition. The older men thrive with the exception of Shane. (I have to tell you, I used to smoke. I quit almost 3 years ago. I used the patch. Apparently Shane was using "survivor" to quit smoking. I can't believe that this idiot smoked three packs a day up until he was actually on Exile Island. He mentions that it's been 31 hours since he had a cigarette, so I rather imagine he was somewhere puffing his last when the boat picked him up. You KNOW you are going to be under a lot of stress out there, no food, limited water, bare essentials as far as shelter and clothing. Why on earth wouldn't you quit the moment you were accepted, do a cycle on the patch and go out there at least minimally detoxed so that the habit might still be bugging you but the physical addiction is not. This makes Shane the lamest player ever in my opinion. He deep sixed himself from the minute he was chosen to go on this adventure by not preparing with an ounce of intelligence.)
Tina apparently found a huge cache of oysters on one of her lonely walks around the island. She planned to keep it a secret so that she could use it later on to keep herself strong. When she was tossed, that valuable food source was probably lost to the tribes forever since nobody else seemed to enjoy exploring like she did.
When Bruce has trouble sleeping, he does karate. Shane says he's cool with Bruce getting his "Myagi" on because he likes weird people.
Ooo, remember when Misty was trying to be sneaky and make her tribe think she found the immunity idol on exile island. Wow, is she a terrible liar. She hints around at it and smiles, but isn't convincing at all and most of her tribe knew immediately she didn't have the idol.
The night after the first tribal council, there was a horrible storm. Bruce, who I have come to believe is really a strange person, causes an uproar at the older men's camp when he insists on washing his hands with the last 1/2 bottle of drinking water they have at camp. Shane tells him to go down to the ocean and wash his hands, but he says he's "not going in the water." He then says that he will not DRINK any and will use his share to wash his hands. Shane says it's not about shares, it's about having only 1/2 bottle and it could rain for three days. (I'm surprised nobody there has figured out a way to capture the rain water for drinking.) Bruce says his hands are swollen from a bad allergy reaction (?) and he uses the drinking water to wash his hands. Shane says it is just unacceptable considering he could have just stuck his hands out in the rain which was a DOWNPOUR and washed his hands in the rain. Very odd.
The younger women wait out the rain by singing. Yep, they sing. They huddle up in their little shelter and Courtney teaches them a song. Courtney says she loves these women because they are so interesting. (My Scott swears that one of the songs she is teaching them has something to do with tantric sex, but I don't know if that's true or not.)
We see the four tribes turned into two tribes and they do the weird wooden snake challenge. At the Casaya beach, Shane immediately sets up the four person alliance with Aras, Courtney and Danielle. At La Mina, Terry and Dan get together with Nick and Austin. So quick, without even knowing one another.
One interesting new scene shows us Cirie and Melinda as they walk in the wet foliage and drink drops of water off the plant leaves there. Cirie remarks how it's so little water but is so refreshing. Melinda says this new tribe is in bad shape because they have no fire.
I am reminded how stupid Shane is as he sits there dictating that either Melinda or Cirie goes this time and the other one goes next. Melinda goes and Bruce is part of the tribe and he begins quickly helping the tribe get drinking water. The Casaya tribe makes a big deal about how great Bruce is which condemns him a second time to Exile Island. Shane seems shocked by this.
That night, Casaya has at one another around the campfire. Apparently, there is a feeling that the wrong people are being put in various positions at the challenges. That day, they had competed by using a huge slingshot to shoot balls out over a beam in the water where the other tribe members were standing trying to catch the balls. Bobby feels he should have been catching but ended up as a shooter because Courtney and Danielle wanted to "have all the fun" out in the water catching. Cirie is quiet and later says in private that they are the most aggravating annoying people she has ever been around in her life.
During the argument, Bobby says that he KNOWS that Courtney, Danielle, Shane and Aras have an alliance and that he's tired of them being their little group of four and not caring what anyone else thinks. He says they are negative people and he doesn't want to be around them. Aras then leads them in primal scream therapy...hahahah....and then Aras says they have to start working as a team to win the challenges. They decide that Aras is the "challenge leader". He will determine who should be in what spot, etc. Aras says later that this group is the worst "team" he's ever seen as far as working together.
One of the things I have come to really LIKE about Cirie is that she sits and watches everyone else go nuts and just grins and stays cheerful. The Casaya tribe is really hungry, and Aras spots a snake, a boa, and he nails it with the machete. Having finally acquired fire, they cook the snake and eat it. I was a little surprised by this because in past Survivors there have been strict guidelines as to what they could kill and eat. I know that someone killed a pelican once and they were going to eat it and were warned off because the pelicans had parasites and stuff that would be dangerous. I know that one survivor they were not allowed to kill the monkeys that were nearby and that in the outback kangaroo were off limits. Rumors have been around for years that the pig that they did kill and eat on Outback was actually one that was relatively tame that had been purchased and brought there for them to chase. But anyway, they killed the snake, wrapped it around a stick and cooked it. Courtney tells them that the snake represents power, transformation and healing. Shane repeats this with a bit of sarcasm in his voice. Cirie says if snake is supposed to help them achieve togetherness, she's willing to listen but she's looking at that snake with a not a little bit of fear. She is, however, smart. She says if eating that snake will keep her in the group and maybe buy her some time, she'll eat the snake. They all get tidbits of snake meat on twigs and sort of toast each other with it and down the hatch. Courtney and the others "thank" the snake for giving them life while Cirie squeals, "eeee, I'm eating snake!" I don't just like Cirie, I have come to adore her.
Misty gets voted out and has to admit she didn't find the immunity idol. Three people are now gone, Tina, Melinda and Misty.
OK, how many of you thought Shane's son was like 6-8 years old, a cute little boy who was crying himself to sleep missing daddy? Shane is missing his son because today is his birthday...his 13th birthday. He's 13. Somehow I just pictured that kid as much younger and more pitiful. Apparently the kid is named "Boston" which is why that is what is tattooed over his heart. He says they have a special relationship. (I'm thinking that this kid is probably watching his dad be wimpy and want to go home over and over and wishing he would buck up and play smart and WIN. I mean the kid will get loads of street cred with his buddies for his dad being on survivor, but not if his dad acts as goofy all the way as he has so far.) His tribe reassures Shane that he is a good father despite missing his son's 13th birthday and they sing Happy Birthday to him, and Survivor actually airs this which means they had to pay royalties for the song. Cirie mentions how close they felt doing this, but admits "it's not going to last."
Sally and Austin have an interesting conversation where we learn that Sally has been going through some tough times. Apparently, she is the offspring of very religious parents who are very upset with her for recently obtaining a divorce. She says she was always the person who did everything right and followed all the rules and that her divorce has caused a huge rift between her and her parents and while she knows they love her, they have almost no contact at this point.
She says they don't mention her name or talk about her anymore. Austin thinks that it is ridiculous and a terrible shame for her to be treated like that. Sally says she hopes that someday that changes and they will be close again but right now they need their space. Austin wants to keep Sally around.
Terry finds the immunity idol on Exile Island. Terry is starting to annoy me being so strong and perfect. He's like the golden survivor.
Casaya continues to fall apart in camp despite their ability to come together to win challenges. Shane and Danielle yell at one another. Cirie says it's like "some psychotic joke" that the foursome of Danielle, Courtney, Shane and Aras are a foursome. They still win the immunity challenge putting Sally in severe jeopardy on La Mina. Austin manages to get the men to break their alliance with Ruth Marie and saves Sally. Ruth Marie is gone. She says it's not a game of honor, but a game of deception, so they didn't do anything wrong by voting her off.
Day 12 at Casaya brings more "fire" works. Danielle and Cirie are trying to get the fire up and going. Bobby is sleeping. Danielle says Bobby never does anything. Cirie just chuckles at it all. Finally Cirie goes and wakes Bob up and asks if he is OK and asks him nicely to help them get the fire up so they can boil water to cook the snails when the others come back. Danielle and Courtney sit back and Bob starts using the sticks they've collected to help the fire. He starts teasing about where to put the sticks and Danielle says "IN THE FIRE" apparently believing he doesn't understand. Cirie just smiles and chuckles inwardly while Danielle tells Bob to never mind, she will do it. Bobby goes back to the shelter and back to sleep.
The Casaya tribe is bathing. Bruce has a bar of soap, a big bowl of water and the scrub brush. Danielle and Courtney have another bar of soap and are out in the ocean. The cameraman cracks my Scott up by zooming in on Danielle's boobs lathered with the soap. Danielle and Courtney say that they want one bar of soap to be the GIRL'S bar of soap. They say that the bar Bruce is using has all this black hair on it where he used it and they want to let the men use that bar and the remaining third bar, but they want ONE bar to be just theirs so they aren't grossed out by the man hair on their soap. Courtney comes into camp and announces that the soap she has wrapped in palm leaves is the "GIRL SOAP" and for the men not to use it. Shane takes offense and says he'd like to call it the "LUNATIC'S SOAP." He says they are out there sharing everything and he thinks it's silly to make a big deal about "girl soap".
Casaya wins the next reward but their camp is completely flooded so they ate their fish raw. Cirie eats it but worries about waking up with some sort of sickness from it. Bobby and Bruce spend the night in the outhouse and drink the last bottle of wine. It costs Bobby big time and after they lose the immunity challenge, Bobby is sent home. He says his tribe had it in for him from the beginning and that if you get enough weaklings together, they can form a pretty strong block.
Shane wants out of the alliance and before he can even finish his sentence requesting to be freed from his commitment, Danielle says "DONE".
The next challenge is a combined reward and immunity. Dan and Sally struggle on the puzzle and blow a huge lead to end up being the losers. Casaya seems to know that the four men, Dan, Terry, Austin and Nick have an alliance and they save Sally being thrown off the island by sending her to Exile Island where she will miss the tribal council that would have been her last.
Casaya gets all chummy over at the Panamanian barbecue. He says everybody is all in love again. (Don't worry Cirie, there's a couple of days before an immunity challenge and they will hate each other again soon.)
Dan is sent home because of his failure to solve the puzzle at the combo challenge and because he seems to be the weakest of the group.
So, these folks are gone:
Tina
Melinda
Misty
Ruth Marie
Bobby
Dan
The next new episode is March 30th. There are now 10 Castaways. The rewards get bigger and the risks get greater. We see someone being taken on board a boat at night as we hear a voice saying "we have a medical emergency" and we are then told someone may be forced to leave the game.
Till then....just keep on Surviving!
