The Apprentice - Martha Stewart
Episode 10
We begin this week with big mouth Jim revealing his strategy to Dawna. Part of Jim's strategy was to help keep Marcela in the game, since he felt she posed no threat. Dawna's strategy was different. She wanted to go up against the strongest candidates in order to really prove herself. That's the way you should play it.
Upon the return of Marcella from the conference room Bethenny leapt into Marcela's arms and the two fell down on the floor. Dawna looked away as Jim gave Marcela a hug and congratulated her on defending herself in the conference room..
The next morning the teams meet with Martha in the garden of her Turkey Hill house. Let me say her house has the perfect name…Turkey Hill…..since I think Martha is one giant turkey, it fits her so well. And this show just keeps getting worse in the ego boosting of Martha. I mean come on how many houses does this woman have. How many were bought with stock money from her insider trader days. Joining them was two nobodies from GM. There was a third person, I think in marketing. The three of them were to be the judge’s for the week's task.
Each team had to create an display to highlight and promote Buick's new Lucerne. Both would get an empty dealership showroom, an office at the McCann-Erickson Advertising Agency, and a $65,000 budget. Hmmm….car looks pretty good….may have to check that one out when it is time for a new car.
Leslie would be Matchstick’s project manager. Ryan pitched the idea of creating a dinner table with the car parked next to it. The premise is that the car is so special it even comes to dinner with you. Marcela liked the idea, but Leslie was unsure. As p.m. Leslie should have nixed the idea from the beginning. I think Charles saying it was a good idea showed his stupidity. It was a dumb idea from the get go.
For the third time, Dawna stepped into the role of project manage. Bethenny came up with the tagline "Driven By Elegance”. If they would have only listened to their tag line they would have possibly come up with a better gimic. Since the tagline was “Driven BY Elegance” could they maybe have had someone elegant driving the d**n car. Duh!
Ryan thought the team should create a video to go along with their dinner table display. Leslie agreed. The video was to show the car driving up to an Italian restaurant, and end with the car pulling up to the table, matching the concept of their display. Leslie brought in a PR specialist to help clarify their concept. In an editing bay where Ryan was working on the video, Leslie presented the team with the new tagline the PR agency developed: "Those who enjoy the luxury of choice, choose Buick’s Lucerne." Ryan grew concerned when Leslie decided not to show the car driving up to the restaurant, feeling that the video no longer tied in with the display. True
Primarius hired a professional firm to help put their display together. Of course during the meeting Bethenny and Jim would not stop from bickering over trivial matters. Bethenny observed that they were like a married couple that argued, made up, argued, made up, and then argued some more.
While Dawna was doing whatever Jim sat down with Bethenny to tell her about his strategy of trying to oust Dawna should their team lose. Dawna broke in on their conversation with the news that their main vendor would be late in setting up their display. Dawna not being stupid knew what Jim was planning because after all Jim told Dawna he wanted only the weak in the end so it would make him look better.
Ryan felt that Leslie was "lost" as Matchstick began setting up their display. Last-minute changes were made as Marcela, who Leslie thought was "dead weight" left to run errands to pick up stuff.
The three GM judges arrived to view Primarius's handiwork. Dawna explained that their theme was "driven by elegance" and was intended to showcase the car and create an "experience" for shoppers. Bethenny spoke next, showing off the art-gallery environment they created to surround the car.
Matchstick was met with confused looks from the judges. Leslie tripped over her tongue as she explained their concept of "no valet necessary": The long silence after they presented their video should have definitely signaled to you that this team was done!
Martha was about to return from a business trip when the GM nobodies got her on the phone to hear what the judges had to say. They felt that Matchstick's display was confusing and ineffective. However they said that Primarius's display "absolutely took our breath away." In fact they liked it so much they will be using it in dealerships around the U.S. Don’t you just want to run out and see it in person….lol ;D
This weeks reward dinner at The Four Seasons with Charles and with Susan Lyne, President and CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. At dinner, Jim explained his strategy of destroying his strongest competitors in order to face off against the weakest. Dawna was surprised that he would bring this up, and Susan did, in fact, look taken aback as he went on and on about "playing the game". Stupid Stupid Stupid…..Jim needs to learn when to keep his mouth shut! The CEO gave a look like “this guy aint coming to work here”
The following day, Ryan and Marcela talked through their boardroom strategy of putting the blame for their failure on Leslie. Leslie and Bethenny held a similar session, but to me it was only Leslie talking with Bethenny listening and nodding. I don’t think she said much of anything.
Martha asked Leslie why her team lost. Leslie was blunt: the other team had a superior concept. While Leslie felt that their concept was good, she explained that it didn't come together as well as Primarius's. Charles thought that the idea was clever but that the execution was poor. What does Charles know….he can’t even light his cigar!
Attention turned to the video presentation. Ryan explained his original concept and how Leslie changed it at the last minute. Martha turned to Leslie and Marcela, reminding them that both had lost two tasks as project manager, and that Ryan had won two. "Ryan, you're working with two losers, basically," hahahaha…..funniest line of the whole show!

Leslie blamed Marcela, Ryan and Marcela blamed Leslie. Charles asked Leslie why she didn't give Marcela more to do. Her response was lame and really all she did was talk in circles. Other than bit about playing on the Internet, I don’t think I heard anything relevant. Martha sends them all out to conference room while she, Charles and Alexis have a threesome….I mean discuss whom should go home
Back in the boardroom, Martha tells Ryan and Marcela to show more backbone. She pointed out Marcela's slouched posture as evidence that she wasn't displaying enough of that vital quality. I was wondering when someone was gonna say something to her. I am sorry you just don’t go into a board/conference room and slouch the way Marcela did. To me that showed a lack of interest in being there. I would have fired her for sure, but alas, Leslie was sent packing because she talked to much without saying anything.
Next up is that awful letter that Martha rights to each person she sends home. Pretty much said find a job in marketing and you will succeed.
You know for someone who can’t stand Martha Stewart ( I really do not like her one little bit), I am enjoying the show. I think it is the competitiveness in me that likes the show. Whatever it is, I am hooked. I think more so for the contestants and not for Martha. I think the shameless plugging of her, her company, her house, her garden, her food and everything else that is golden about Martha, is tiring. Of course the same thing happens on Trumps Apprentice but for some reason it does not bother me as much. I really just want to throw up every time I hear the name Martha Stewart.
Until next week…..hugs and kisses
