This episode is called "Crazy Fights, Snake Dinners", but I'm not sure why. The recap of last week features the joining of the tribes, and the exile of Bruce to Exile Island, Shane demanding God quit raining on them, and the shifting around of alliances. We relive the loss of the fishing spear and the immunity challenge. Finally, we see Casaya vote Melinda off after hearing Cirie's famous squeak "If someone wants to quit, let them quit."
After the tribal council, Bruce is welcomed into the Casaya tribe and they all return to camp. Bruce is quick to ask where the water source is. They ask if he knows how to start a fire. Bruce says they all have good hearts on his new tribe but they really need his help. He asks them what they want first, fire or water and they reply "water". There is some discussion about boiling water but he explains that they can make a filter using t-shirts and it will filter out 90% of the impurities in it.
Shane says Bruce is neurotic and can't do anything without mentioning he's been doing it for 20 or 40 years and is certified to teach it and of COURSE, he grates on Shane's nerves. Shane says he wishes he would just shut up.
They all talk about the water filter and some of the tribe are skeptical about how it could remove the bacteria from the water. Some drink, some don't.
La Mina is hungry and is busy catching snails and crushing them up to put in boiling water. They also have crab legs (not big pretty ones, but a little protien) and the whole tribe seems to be going down hill without food. They are trying to fish with the drop lines but the only thing they seem to catch is puffer fish, which are poisonous. (I'm wondering if Bruce knows how to cut up some sushi?) They realy miss the spear.
Finally, Jerry catches a little bitty fish, but they are all happy to cook "Nemo" as they call it and they even think it had a lot of meat for a "little guy".
Reward challenge. Apparently Casaya is looking and feeling better because Bruce is helping them with his survival skills. The challenge puts four people standing on a balance beam out in the water. The other tribe members take turns shooting balls that are just a little smaller than a soccer ball out over the water toward the guys on the balance beam using a giant slingshot contraption. The shooter has to sit down and lean back pulling the stretchy band back with the ball in the "cup" in the middle and they release at the same time. The four catchers out on the balance beam must catch the balls. They can jump into the water to catch, but must come up with the ball in order to score a point. First tribe with five points wins.
They are playing for a tarp, blankets, a lantern with fuel in it, two big water cans, two pillows and rope. One member of the losing tribe will be sent to Exile Island. Misty, Dan and Ruth Marie will be the shooters for La Mina. Bob, Bruce, and Cirie will shoot for Casaya.
Bobby and Misty shoot first. Terry scores for La Mina. Aras can't catch the ball launched by Bobby. Bobby and Misty shoot again. Aras catches this time for Casaya and Terry misses but bounces the ball to Nick and both tribes score. Everyone but Nick ends up in the water and has to climb back up.
Dan and Bruce step up to shoot. Danielle catches from Bruce, Terry snags Dan's shot. Dan shoots, Shane catches. Bruce overshoots the beam and the score is now tied 3 to 3.
Ruth Marie comes up to shoot for La Mina, and Cirie is shooting for Casaya. Ruth Marie's shot isn't caught, Shane catches one for Casaya. Ruth Marie and Cirie still shooting. Terry catches Ruth Marie's shot and nobody catches Cirie's shot. They are tied 4 to 4.
Misty and Bob are shooting again. Terry catches for La Mina and Shane comes up short for Casaya. La Mina wins reward. They get all the goodies and also get to choose who Casaya must send into exile. Having heard Casaya cooing over the wonder that is Bruce, La Mina makes the obvious game strategy choice and sends the Casaya tribe "savior" back for another trip into exile. Shane says, "These guys are playing for keeps, huh." Well, YEAH, Shane....that and a million dollars. I'm thinking that if SHANE would stop telling everything he knows to everyone, their tribe might have a better chance of getting things to go their way. He pulled the completely stupid move of outting his alliance last week by tellin Cirie and Melinda they were going, 1 and 2, in whatever order. Now he and the others have told La Mina that they were dying until Bruce showed up to save them so OF COURSE when La Mina had a chance to deprive them of Bruce, they did it. To their credit, La Mina is obviously sorry for Bruce who Dan and Terry both consider a pal, but the fact is, their pal is on the competing tribe and they did what they felt was the best for their tribe. Later on, if there's a merge and Bruce is still around to hook up with them, they can apologize and take him on some reward challenge one of them wins or something. That's probably more than Shane would do since he'd want one of the bikini babes to go with him.
Bruce leaves with a confident smile on his face. It may not be pleasant, but he'll survive this, no doubt about it.
Back at La Mina camp, they talk about how they are thrilled with the reward booty. They use the tarp to reinforce their shelter which was originally designed for the advent of a tarp at some point in the game. That night there is a horrible torrential rainstorm and the tarp was put to good use, keeping them warm and dry. They even have a moment of silence for their pal Bruce who they know is enduring the storm out on Exile Island. Terry says that it was a very hard decision to send Bruce back out there but Bruce was too big of an asset to the other tribe. Without Bruce, Casaya is weakened, but they are sorry that Bruce ended up on the island again.
Bruce says he was only with his new tribe less than 24 hours before going back to the island. He notes he has now spent more time on Exile Island than he has with any tribe. He adds that he didn't think it could possibly be worse than the other night he spent there right up until the storm hit. He says he didn't even have time to look for the immunity idol.
Morning rolls around and the sea is still roiling from the storm. Casaya is boiling water. Courtney says that the other tribe sending Bruce back to Exile Island was one of the most evil things she had ever seen anyone do. She mourns that they lost the reward and then lost Bruce and now they are all on a downer. Shane is in a mood. He has a stump or something he is sitting on that is HIS "thinking seat". He's being loud and obnoxious. Aras says the personalities in their tribe aren't working very well. Courtney asks Shane to help with the boiling of water. They mouth off to one another.
Cirie laughs at Courtney and Shane. She says how silly is it that they are in an alliance and they can't stand each other. How crazy is that?
Courtney says she doesn't know why Shane is always angry at her. Shane says he doesn't know how he will get through this with Courtney there. He laments that he swore on his son's life that he would stick with his alliance but now he can't stand Courtney. Courtney says Shane has some inner angst that he's taking out on her or something and she's tired of it. Oh, they are such a happy group. Shane says Courtney is a lunatic. Pot? Kettle?
Sally and Misty continue to work on Austin and Nick to make them a foursome alliance. Misty says that she is a natural flirt and that she came out there to have fun and play the game. She is apparently playing the game by giving Austin a back rub. Sally comments that she's the "everyone's pal" kind of girl and that she and Misty work well together. She also notes that Misty puts a little extra into the backrubs for Austin and Nick. Sally thinks Misty is super smart. Misty looks like she's been eaten alive by bugs. They are thinking if they go to the merge four strong, they will be able to go really far in the game. Misty says they can just say "we're just little girls."
Austin says he seems to be the person everyone comes to and says, hey we trust you and we want you with us. He says the two girls have approached him but so have Terry and Dan. He thinks it's dangerous trying to play both sides for too long. The girls are trying to make Austin see that Terry is a "power player" and that he has a better chance with them.
At immunity challenge, Bruce is back from Exile Island. I want to say up front, I hated this challenge. It was completely confrontational. There are five circles laid out in the sand. Inside each circle there is buried somewhere a bag. When Jeff gives the signal, groups from the tribe (one man, one woman or two men, two men, or whatever grouping Jeff calls for) run to the next circle in line and dig for the bag. When the bag is found, they have to bring the bag back to a finish mat. The winner of each round is the person who is able to touch the mat and the bag at the same time. The clincher is there is only one bag and the two tribes both need it. They have to fight for it. The first tribe with 3 bags wins. I think I hated this because it just seemed to be completely physical with very little strategy. I also think it was brutal to watch them. Survivor seldom has challenges where they literally throw one another to the ground, wrestle, elbow people, and it just didn't appeal to me.
Round 1 is two women against two women. Cirie and Danielle against Sally and Misty. Everyone runs to the first circle and starts to dig. Danielle is holding Misty down to stop her from digging and Cirie is sitting on Sally. They have the bag out of the sand, but they are wrestling all over fighting for the bag. Finally, Cirie reaches into the pile of wrestling women and grabs a corner of the bag and stretches back toward the finish mat. They have wrestled back toward the mat and she is just barely able to touch the finish mat, winning the bag for the Casaya tribe.
Round 2 is two men against two men. Nick and Terry against Bruce and Bobby. Bruce tries to tackle Terry immediately but misses. Terry and Bobby are wrestling. Nick is digging but Bruce is trying to pull him back. Nick has the bag and manages to get away from the others and sprint to the finish mat. Score is 1 Casaya, 1 La Mina.
Round 3 is two men and a woman against two men and a woman. Shane, Aras and Courtney against Austin, Dan and Ruth Marie. Shane tries to tackle Dan and Dan shows a lot more strength than they thought. Aras comes up with the bag but Austin takes him down. Shane manages to wrestle it away. Austin finally wrestles with Shane until he connects with the finish mat. Lamina leads 2 to 1.
Round 4 is two women and a man against two women and a man. Courtney, Cirie, Aras against Sally, Misty and Nickj. Cirie finds the bag, Nick pulls it up, Aras trys to take it away. Misty takes down Aras and all six are tugging at the bag. NO CHOKING says Jeff...don't make me call it. Aras has the bag and he sprints up to land on the mat. They are tied.
Round 5 is one man and one woman from each tribe. The tribe that wins this round wins immunity. Bobby and Danielle taking on Ruth Marie and Terry. Danielle picks up Ruth Marie and slams her to the gound. Bobby pulls the bag out but can't get free. Bobby tackles Terry twice to keep him from escaping to run back to the mat. Finally Terry hands off to Ruth Marie and she runs full tilt toward the finish mat. Bobby comes up from behind, grabs hold of her top and pulls toward HIS finish mat instead of hers. He gets to his mat and reaches down where he has drug Ruth Marie the last few yards and touches the bag to win.
Casaya wins immunity, a member of La Mina is going home. Back at camp, La Mina contemplates their choice. Everyone is a little bummed of course. Dan, Austin and Terry are talking about it and while they all think that Ruth Marie is technically the weakest, they also realize that if they based who was going home on today's challenge, Misty was the one who would go. Austin says he loves Misty but has to admit that she didn't do well in today's challenge. Finally they decide that Misty is an engineer, smart as hell, and she could be a threat. They plan to vote her out.
Misty and Sally corner Nick and they say that they think Ruth Marie or Dan should be the choice to go, despite the fact that "old" Dan kicked butt in a very physical challenge. They finally decide it should be Ruth Marie and they figure Austin and Nick are voting with them. Sally stands up for Dan, saying that she believes he has a lot to offer the tribe. Ruth Marie is struggling.
We get to see a big old fat iguana sittin' on a rock. It was cool.
Austin tells Nick that they are really between a rock and a hard place.
Tribal council begins with them lighting their torches since a bunch of them have never been to tribal council before. Jeff asks Terry how tough it's been so far and he says it's tough physically but he says mentally, he's still ok. Dan says he loves his tribe, the companionship is great. Sally says it's been everything she ever thought it would be. They are hungry. Austin said that little bitty fish was definitely a plus. Jeff asks about the spear. They hedge and say they had a little incident with the spear and they haven't had much luck with it. They don't tell him it's gone.
Jeff asks Misty if she thinks all seven people are playing for the tribe at this point. She says they really are a team. Terry says that a vote is hard but they have discussed who they are voting for and they all understand that someone has to go. Ruth Marie says she is kind of odd man out because she came into the tribe without anyone else from the old tribe she was in. Nick says his vote is based on a group decision rather than an individual choice. Jeff mentions that Misty has been to Exile Island and may have the immunity idol.
They vote. Misty and Sally vote for Ruth Marie. Dan, Austin, Terry, Ruth Marie and Nick all vote for Misty. She is completely blindsided. Jeff asks her if she found the immunity idol and she says "No, I did not." Her torch is snuffed.
Jeff says they do seem to be a very unified tribe but that as the votes show, even in the tightest groups, someone is always on the outside.
Preview for the next show shows Shane in a yelling match with Courtney and Danielle and the La Mina tribe is getting weak from starvation, having had no food to speak of for ten days.
