As usual, the show starts out by recapping last week's show. I am wondering why they bothered to give these tribes names since Jeff is referring to them only as Older Men, Younger Men, Older Women, Younger Women. I just noticed that Misty, while on Exile Island, ate a worm. Seems a little early for that.
The night brings a huge storm. The older men realize that their canopy faces the wrong way and the rain is coming in under their shelter. Shane is nearly struck by lightning. The younger men, have practically no shelter and are saying they will die if the sun doesn't come up soon. The older women who didn't need Tina struggle trying to start a fire with no luck. The younger women snag a papaya out of a tree and eat it and sort of make orgasm sounds while they eat.
Shane is thinking about missing his kid and wanting to be at his football practice he suddenly says he doesn't know why he did this thing...he doesn't need the money. He says his life is always busy and that this place has a lot of down time and he's miserable. He yells at God and demands "No more torrential downpours."
Reward challenge starts with everyone being asked to stand on a disk. Then they turn over their disks and two people have new buffs, Terry and Danielle. La Mina and Casaya respectively. They have to pick...women pick men and men pick women.
Casaya
Danielle picks Shane
Shane picks Courtney
Courtney picks Aras
Aras picks Cirie
Cirie picks Bobby
Bobby has to take Melinda
La Mina
Terry picks Sally
Sally picks Austin
Austin picks Misty
Misty picks Nick
Nick picks Ruth Marie
Ruth Marie picks Dan
Bruce is left over, but he is NOT going home. He is guaranteed safety at the next tribal council. He goes to Exile Island for three days and then replaces the person voted out of whichever tribe loses immunity. He will have flint to make fire on the island. He is elated.
La Mina is orange, Casaya is purple.
Reward is a race through an obstacle course that has six large wooden snakes tied to things and hidden throughout. The two tribes must choose one person to be the "snake wrangler". That person must carry all of the snakes to the end of the course. The first station of the obstacle course is a big fence and there are wooden snakes tied to the rails. They must first get the snakes free and then crawl under the fence, then climb over a 12 foot A-frame wall. Next is a bamboo "crawl" where there are low rails that must be crawled under. There are additional wooden snakes tied to the rails in the crawl. At this point the snake wrangler will be carrying 4 of the 6 snakes. The tribe must then make it's way across a ladder bridge (a bridge made out of ladders laid out more or less flat and elevated.) Anyone falling off the bridge must go back and start it again. The last phase is through a mud pit under a fence, forcing the person to literally dive completely under the murky muddy water. The snake wrangler has to do this with 4 of the heavy snakes. (These snakes are about 8 feet long and probably a good 4 to 5 inches in diameter and made out of wood, so they are quite heavy.) As soon as they are out of the mud, they are at a pit of leaves (uh oh Cirie) and there are two more snakes hidden in the leaves. They must find those and then race to the finish line.
They are playing for fishing ear, goggles, a Hawaiian sling, hooks and drop lines, snorkel and fins. In addition they get a raft and four paddles. (This tells me that they don't have a boat at camp, but that the boats we saw them in at the beginning are like shuttles taking them back and forth. The raft will give them a platform to fish from. La Mina chooses Nick as their snake wrangler. Casaya chooses Courtney. I gotta wonder why Courtney. Those snakes are BIG and HEAVY.
I have to mention here that my favorite part of this whole challenge is at the mud pit when Bobby is down in the water, only his head above the water line, and he hesitates a moment before ducking under and submerging his head and face in the muck. At that point, Cirie, leaps down from above and lands with her crotch solidly on Bobby's head. If she hadn't had shorts on, I think she might have engulfed the man.
La Mina wins reward. Casaya was close but took too long finding the last two snakes.
Back at camp Casaya, Shane immediately starts telling his new tribe mates how he was completely unhappy on his "older men" tribe because dang, he's only 34, and those guys were so completely into working all the time. He says he has always been more comfortable with younger people. With the older tribe he was thinking every minute about leaving and here, on his new tribe, he hasn't thought about that at all. This proves that a bunch of younger women in bikinis is a sure fire cure for Shane's missing his home and children.
The Casaya tribe is at the original "older women's" camp. Their shelter was dry and worked out well for them so Casaya is in good shape. Cirie says "oh my god, we have been invaded". Fortunately the younger girls like the new buff color (this was HUGE in the scheme off things). Melinda says that she and Cirie are just not clicking with the new group and that if they don't win immunity, they are screwed. Shane immediately approaches Courtney, Danielle and Aras about a foursome alliance. The others are a little taken aback at this being done so quickly in the game, but they don't discourage Shane from assuming that it's a firm deal.
The La Mina tribe are at the Older Men's original camp. Dan and Terry are happy to be together. They talk to Nick and Austin about the four of them making a pact. Nick and Austin are then approached by Sally, pitching a Nick Austin Sally Misty pact. Nick seems amenable to the four men's alliance, at leasts for the short term. Austin and Nick realize they are in the middle of a tug of war between the two older men and the two younger women.
Meanwhile, Bruce is on exile island. The first clue is written out for him (the one they gave misty). It says: You have a lot of time out here to think about "why" you were the first one out here.
The next clue: It is up above the tide line.
There is also a map thing on the other side of the paper or skin or whatever the clues are written on. Bruce reads these clues and contemplates the map. He says he is going to spend his time there looking for the idol as soon as he gets a fire started. Unfortunately, his flint breaks and he is unable to get a fire going. We get to watch him do some martial arts training to "clear his mind." there is a huge storm again, nasty lightning. Bruce says he is miserable and would not wish this on his worst enemy.
Some of the La Mina folk decide they want to go fish for some dinner. Sally and I believe Nick paddle out on the raft after a brief explanation about how to use the spear from Terry. Terry reminds them, "be sure to hold on to it." I begin feeling a sense of foreboding. They are out a way from shore and you can see the little rays jumping out of the water in the distance. Nick says he can't wait to see the spear in action. My foreboding grows. Sally says she should probably try practicing with it, adding "I just don't want to lose it, that would be the worst." I'm in full blown panic at this point...I KNOW what's about to happen. And over the side goes the spear. Sally dives after it but it is very deep and there's no way she can catch it before it sinks into oblivion.
They return to shore and tell Dan and Terry who look at her like she's insane. They are, like older men often are, forgiving on the outside and polite, but inside, they are less than thrilled.
Jeff asks Misty how the new tribe is working out and she says they are all very upbeat and they are working together really well. He asks Casaya how they are doing and Shane speaks up and says he doesn't know how other people feel about it but he's not going to lie, they are in a dire situation. He says they had planned on acting like they were doing fine to fool the other tribe but the reality is they are physically wrecked. His tribe just stands there listening to him go on. This man is an idiot. A complete idiot.
Immunity is designed to test their ability to work together by having them transport a (and I'm not kidding here) GIANT ZOMBIE HEAD (who comes up with this stuff) to shore from the ocean. There is a boat anchored to the ocean floor by a large box. Each boat has six holes that are plugged with a rubber plug. When Jeff says go, five tribe members must pull the plugs out of the holes and begin bailing water out of the boat as it leaks in. The other two tribe members dive down to the box and begin pulling the boat into shore by picking up the box and walking along the ocean floor with it. Once on shore, the boat has a rope they must clip to a pole on the beach and then they must transport the anchor up the beach to a mat. Once all of that is accomplished, they must put the GIANT ZOMBIE HEAD they have carried with them all this time onto the GIANT ZOMBIE BODY that is behind the finish mat. First tribe with a competed GIANT ZOMBIE, wins.
The divers have to switch out. Casaya is having troubles early on, going literally backward. La Mina is in the lead...Jeff points out that La Mina is ONLY in the lead because Casaya is completely inept. Terry pretty much finished pulling the anchor along the ocean floor and up to the shore. Misty gets the boat clipped to the hitching post and La Mina carries their anchor to the finish mat. Casaya is close, but La Mina is too far ahead and they put the head on their GIANT ZOMBIE. I didn't think that Casaya had anything to fear from the zombies actually since the primary diet of zombies is brains, and well, Casaya is a little light in that area, but this time the zombies have cost them a trip to tribal council.
At this point, we are in for a treat. Shane is about to launch into what can best be described as his best "Clash" impersonation. Should he stay or should he go?
Apparently losing immunity has dampened Shane's spirits. He says 1) he hates to lose, 2) he's beat and wiped out 3) he wants a cigarette, he wants coffee, he wants a big sandwich and 4) he wants to call his kids and tell them he loves them and this is the stupidest thing he ever did. He tells his "alliance" he wants them to vote him off. He says he just can't go on. He wants them to vote him off. They are not pleased. They tell him he is letting them down.
Melinda tells Cirie that Shane has announced he wants to quit. Cirie says "if he wants to quit, let him quit." She figures that either she or Melinda was going to be voted off, so Shane's wanting to quit is good news. Aras wants Shane to reconsider. He tells him that they will have water and food in a day or so and that if he can just hold on till then, but Shane shakes his head and says "I don't want to be here, man." I'm with Cirie on this...LET HIM QUIT. The man is a complete waste of space and has absolutely NOTHIING to contribute to the tribe. Either one of the two older women, Cirie and Melinda, can outwork him, out think him, and outlast him. Send the pathetic loser home. Seriously.
Aras tells him that if he will just try to stay until he gets some food and water in him, then if he still wants to go, everyone will be "down with voting him home." Aras tells him that dehydration is probably affecting his thinking and that if he waits a day or so, he might really want to stay. Shane, after saying things like "it's impossible, there's no way" for a while, suddenly says, "oh, well OK."
Elated Aras says, "OK, well then who do you want to vote off tonight?" The two of them walk over to the rest of the tribe and Aras says he hates to be the one to bring this up but Shane has decided he wants to stay. Shane says, I'm really sorry for my flip flop today but I haven't had any water (like who has, dimwit) and he now realizes there is no reason why he shouldn't try to stay. If he drinks some water, he might feel better. So now they have to talk about who should go. Aras says he wants to be as honest as possible and he wants the tribe to be as strong as possible so nothing personal but well, he blurts out that he is voting for Melinda or Cirie.
Courtney is furious. She knows that Aras has just outed their alliance to the whole tribe. He has, without talking to anyone, just announced that one of the two older women is going home that night and it's clear he assumes that his "alliance" will vote with him. Shane says he doesn't care which one of them goes....but whichever one goes this time, the other goes the next time, further making it clear there is an alliance. Courtney says she considers this to be total infidelity and that she thinks it will be really hard to know if Shane is really there for them in the alliance.
Cirie and Melinda are unhappy but there is nothing they can do to change things. Melinda says she knows that she is likely to go because she was the last person picked for the new tribe. Shane, having recovered from his mind flip earlier is now talking about his "strategy" and how one goes this time and the other goes next time. He's really smug about it which considering how this went down...is just offensive.
They arrive at tribal council and Bruce is brought in to listen to the discussion. Shane says that this is the worst thing he has ever been through. He admits that he just quit smoking on the day he arrived on the island. Jeff asks if he is in some sort of detox thing and Shane replies that it's "some kind of psychotic bad idea detox."
Cirie said that everyone was doing pretty well at camp until today when the two women were told that one of them were going home today. Melinda says that they tried just as hard as everyone on the challenges. She also says that someone actually wanted to quit at one point but that she, wanting to stay as much as she does, will likely go home. Cirie says she would be disappointed for her whole family is she was forced to leave tonight.
They vote. Cirie and Melinda vote for Shane. The rest of the tribe votes for Melinda and she is sent home. Bruce is now part of the Casaya tribe. I have no doubt these jerks will underestimate him as much as they have everyone else in this game.
