Survivor Guatemala
Episode 9
Pants on fire for no reason.
Jamie's feelings are hurt by Bobby Jon telling him he had "no class". He says that's the same as calling him white trash. It broke his heart. One has to wonder, though. Do you think that the paranoia and hurt Jamie is feeling has to do with Bobby Jon's telling him he had "no class" or did it have to do with the fact that he got more than just Bobby Jon's vote to go home? Is he beginning to realize that the "everyone not in my original little group here is my enemy" philosophy he's been playing in this game is a dangerous one? Whether he has a real change of heart or not, he is the one chanting "play the game, play the game" so I would suggest he decide to "play the game."
Finally, Bobby Jon and Jamie shake hands and make up, more or less. Rafe says that either Jamie changes his attitude in the game or he is going to "change up the game." There is apparently some hope that the alliance of old Nakum's will finally split up. Search for the immunity idol continues.
Gary is starting to use football metaphors to describe his game play. I think maybe he's turned his game up a notch. I am glad to see that.
Reward challenge is using the Atlatl....A device used for throwing the spear. The spear was placed in a groove on the Atlatl then the atlatl was strapped to the arm. After throwing the spear the tip of the spear (a dart) was projected out of the spear into the pray. After the battle was over the spear part (not the dart) could be retrived. Thats the official description...I would call it a thing you could use to fling a spear or arrow. A fling thing. My Scott tells me that these things are darn hard to use. He's impressed at them being able to do it as well as they do. We concluded that there was probably a lot of "practice" that we didn't see because Survivor was showing us all about Jamie's being upset and all.
Reward is food...a meal. But there's a catch. Everyone flings an arrow with the fling thing and try to get close to a pole. Closest to the pole gets steak and lobster and a clue to where the hidden idol is. Everyone else gets put in line as they fling the arrow from closest to furthest and the meals downgrade the further away from the pole you were. Jamie is the last to throw and he opts to go to the end of the line to "make up for his bad behavior the other day, eating and taunting the people in the challenge. He will take the last place meal. He says "we are one tribe now, I'm sorry I didn't see that sooner."
Final order and meal was:
Judd - Steak and Lobster which he is then allowed to share, along with booze and dessert with Bobby Jon and Stephanie
Cindy - big chicken dinner
Danni - big plate of spaghetti
Stephanie - Burger and a Beer
Gary - a slice of pizza
Rafe - Ham and cheese sandwich
Bobby John - Baked Potato
Lydia - a fish, a little fish
Jamie - Ramone (sp?) and water from the lake (boiled)
Judd gets drunk of course. And throws up later, but NOT in the shelter. I always wonder if these guys who win food rewards and start eating like crazy get sick later, because after being without food for a long time, it's hard to eat at first without upsetting your stomach. The three eating the "feast" feel a little self conscious and Jeff asks Gary if it is bothering him watching and he replies "no, I enjoy watching." Later he says, "two hours of watching them gorge themselves and get drunk...it's just not my idea of fun." Judd kind of falls around a lot at camp, trying to help Bobby Jon pick up a 30 foot log to put on the fire, your usual drunken survivor stupid stuff.
Judd reads the clue to the hidden immunity idol to Stephanie. It tells them it's NOT on the ground. Steph immediately says that it must be up in a tree somewhere. Judd says he just can't keep a secret. Then he goes to the rest of the group and tells them that clue said that the clue tells him that the idol is for certain ON THE GROUND. He lets us know privately that he has no problem lying to his tribemates.
Jamie is paranoid still. He and Rafe are playing that African stone game, mancala. Rafe was smart to bring his knowledge of this game with him because all you need to play it is some stones and a place to draw dirt circles and it passes the time.
Gary is checking around to find out if he is safe and tells Jamie (the paranoid, remember) that he is going to vote WITH him because he doesn't want to make waves, meaning he will vote against his own group and vote with the majority. Jamie (the paranoid) hears this as Gary saying "I'm voting for you, Jamie." First of all, Gary would have to be a complete idiot to tell Jamie that he planned to vote for him, and secondly, Jamie completely got what he said wrong. They find out that the immunity challenge is all about balance, so we see Gary and Danni walking along the edges of the pyramids being careful not to fall.
The challenge is in three stages. In the first, they must walk a balance beam stopping to untie two planks of wood that are tied to the beam with a BUNCH of knots. Note to survivor hopefuls: practice balancing, untying knots. The first four to finish the first stage go on to round two where they use the planks to cross a knotted rope bridge. You put the plank down between two ropes and then put the second plank in front of you and move to that, retrieve the first plank and put that in front of you and so on. The first two to finish this stage go on to a rope bridge over water. First stage, Stephanie, Gary, Jamie and Rafe move to round two. Second round, Jamie and Rafe move to stage three. Jamie wins immunity.
I think Gary had problems with stage two in this challenge because he is so tall. He was having to bend over to those planks and it was just hard to get his center of gravity low enough to be steady on that rope bridge. By the way, Lydia is still on the show. You know, I see her now and then, and I know she kind of does the competitions...Oh, and she got real teary eyed over that fish she got in the reward challenge because she thought she wouldn't get much more than a cracker. But the thing is, she's playing so low under the radar, it's hard to believe.
The Steph, Jamie, Cindy, Judd, Rafe and who is the other one...oh yeah, LYDIA..I swear I have trouble remembering she's there....plan to vote off Gary because he's been "head gaming" them by things like telling Jamie he was "voting for him." Of course, we know that he said "voting with him" and not "voting for him", but Jamie who is NOT a rocket scientist heard through paranoid colored hearing aids or something. Jamie and Judd reassure Bobby Jon he's not going tonight.
Gary isn't stupid. He's out looking for the hidden idol and notices Judd also looking for the idol....in the trees. NOT on the ground. He told them that the clue said "ON THE GROUND." Gary thinks, maybe I'll look in the trees. Then it's time for tribal council.
Jeff does the obligatory, Can you lie in survivor? discussion. Everyone claims they haven't lied about anything. Cindy says she trusts everyone even though she thinks she shouldn't and she further doesn't think it's possible to get through the game to the end without lying. Jeff then asks Jamie if he wants to give up immunity. He says no. Then Jeff asks if anyone found the immunity idol and wants to invoke it's protection and lo and behold, Gary walks up and hands the thing to him. It seems he found it in a tree after seeing Judd looking UP for the thing instead of down, stuck it in his pocket and kept it secret until that moment in tribal council when it mattered most. Without any chance to regroup, the tribe votes. Bobby Jon tells Jeff "thanks, I enjoyed it" as his torch is snuffed.
One thing that always amazes me is when someone on survivor does something like break a trust, lie, or betray someone when it won't benefit them one bit. We saw two people this week behave in a way that was just plain silly if they wanted to win this game. First, Judd's lie about the immunity idol clue was idiotic. He is in the majority faction, he has no reason to think he will be a target at tribal council, but in his mind, he seems to think...I'm on survivor and must do something sneaky to "up my game". He doesn't need the idol. Stephanie (the only person he is truthful with) doesn't need it. And now, Gary found the thing exactly where Judd told everyone it was NOT. Everyone will now know that Judd cannot be trusted and is willing to lie to not only the people outside his alliance, but those he is supposed to be allied with. It wasn't like there was only ONE of the other group left and if that person found the thing they would have to cannibalize one of their own. Nope. He just thought that somehow that lie made him more of a player.
Jamie is a another guy who does stuff that does not move him forward in the game. In this week's particular instance, he compounds the silliness by misunderstanding what was said to him by Gary. Gary says, I will vote WITH you and Jamie hears, I will vote FOR you. Then, Jamie runs over to his alliance and announces they must get rid of Gary because he is going to vote for Jamie. Newsflash, Jamie....if he doesn't vote for YOU, he will vote for one of the others, right. Assuming he is still voting with his alliance, Gary will vote for one of your group. You just told them that they must save YOU. Plus, there was no way that one vote, even if Gary planned to vote for you, was going to send you home, UNLESS your own group wanted you out. You just told them that if some of them want you gone because of your annoying behavior, they have a backup vote from Gary. Seriously. Not smart. NOT good game play. Being sneaky does NOT equal being smart and playing the game.
Finally, Jamie again keeps letting the other group know what the boot order is. If he keeps up this behavior, he's going to end up in a pinch. Remember the year that the majority alliance got thingyy and gloated during a challenge while they chopped down the coconuts of their tribemates in boot order. Out of the alliance of 6, only 4 go to final four. Two of your alliance knows they are going to be dumped before the end game. If you let them figure out who they are, they have an incentive to go vote with your competitors and send you home. Don't these people watch the show before they go on it?
Bobby Jon showed up on Survivor Live and says he thinks Jamie was sincere to give up his meal in the reward challenge because they were all so hungry. I still think there was some end game jury plans in there somewhere. Bobby Jon thinks that the "gesture of respect" will definitely help Jamie out with the jury if he makes it to the end. That's a big "if" though if Jamie continues his current "strategy".
Other tidbits from Bobby Jon on Survivor Live include his belief that Stephanie is calling all the shots in the "magic six". Also, he says that he believes that his ouster is due to Gary finding the hidden idol. He really doesn't care that Gary was an NFL quarterback. Stephanie really doesn't make him vomit. I know most people already know this, but it's also interesting to note that Bobby Jon had only 28 days between the finale of Palau and the start of filming in Guatemala.
One interesting question that came up was the changing role of Jeff Probst in Survivor. Ethan Zohn was on Survivor Live with Bobby John and host, Dalton Ross. They all agree that Jeff is taking a more active role each season, having more influence on the game by drawing out information at tribal council and often expressing his own opinion.
Bobby Jon mentions something that my Scott often says to me...reward challenges are pretty much a no win situation. If you win, other people are mad, they just can't help it. If you win a trip off somewhere, then the people left behind plot against you. If you take enemies trying to win favor, your allies are upset. If you take your allies, then all of your enemies plan your demise. He says that if he had won the reward that Judd won this week, he would have taken Danni and Gary to eat with him (his allies) because at that point he figures he would be gone anyway.
The preview shows us Jamie whining that Gary is calling him a liar. My guess is that this is about the confusion over Gary voting with or for Jamie. We also see a very muddy challenge for a reward having something to do with a helicopter which may or may not have family members in it. We also see Lydia, apparently waffling on some decision, which is never good for the waffler.
At this point, the competition is heating up. Everyone is now jury bound and so how one plays the game becomes more critical. Little mistakes can be costly. So...until next week....May you all survive well.
