Don't Cry Over Spilled Octopus
JP's departure has the men on Raro more than a little nervous. They are up early while the women sleep in. They are obviously no longer using their position as the tribe strong men as a way of getting out of doing work at camp. Nate is chopping wood like crazy, Adam is worrying about getting water, and Brian goes fishing. Pavarti says she loves it.
Aitu, Day 12, the women are checking out their armpits. Yes, I said armpits. Oddly some of them notice that they have more growth under one arm than under the other. They are sitting looking at the beach, in a tropical paradise and obsessing on their armpits.
Cao Boi is not happy with the women and their work ethic on the Aitu tribe. He says Candace, Becky and Sundra sit around all day. The exception seems to be Flicka who is usually in the same frame as Cao Boi working at something, helping with fishing, etc. He says that hopefully they will keep winning challenges but if they don 't shape up, they will be eliminated.
Reward challenge.
Today you compete two by two
How will you take the strain?
The camp has more food and a whole lot more flavor
For the tribe with the last pair to remain.
Ozzy says, we're going to be eating good tonight!
Aitu is surprised to see JP eliminated. Jonathan looks absolutely shocked.
Each tribe will divide up into three pairs. The pairs will stand on a small platform holding on to one another with one arm while the other arm holds a onto a handle that is connected to a rope that runs over a pully and down to a big hook. The two tribe members remaining after the pairs are formed will take 5 pound bags and add them to the hooks and then they have to wait a few minutes. They can choose which pair will have to bear the extra weight. The last pair standing wins reward for their tribe. Reward is more fishing supplies, spices and bottles of wine and the opportunity to send someone from the losing tribe to exile island.
The pairs for Aitu:
Jonathan and Yul
Sundra and Candace
Ozzy and Flicka
Loaders are Cao Boi and Becky
The pairs for Raro:
Nate and Adam
Rebecca and Stephanie
Cristina and Brad
Loaders are Pavarti and Jenny
Jenny gives Adam and Nate 5 pounds, Candace and Sundra get 5 pounds. Raro gives Jonathan and Yul five pounds and Nate and Adam are now up to 10 pounds and they wait a few more minutes. Nate and Adam get 5 more each and Ozzy and Flicka get their first 5 pounds. Aitu's strategy is to put it all on one pair while Raro is dividing it out evenly among all three pairs.
Time passes Survivor style. Adam and Nate, Jonathan and Yul have 30 pounds each. Brad and Cristina, Candace and Sundra have 15 pounds each. With ten pounds each are Ozzy and Flicka, Rebecca and Stephanie. Some people are definitely starting to struggle and Yul drops his bags eliminating he and Jonathan from the challenge. Rebecca and Stephanie, Ozzy and Flicka each get 5 more pounds. Flicka struggles but hangs on. Rebecca drops her weights taking her pair out of the competition. Sundra drops her bag taking her pair out. Ozzy and Flicka are the only pair left for Aitu. Cristina and Flicka start taunting each other a little. Brad and Cristina each get more weight as do Ozzy and Flicka. Flicka is obviously in a lot of pain and can't hold on. Raro wins reward.
They choose to send Jonathan back to exile island. They decide that they do not want to send people there who have already been there so they can keep the number of people who could possibly have the immunity idol to a minimum. This works strategically, since it reduces the "what if" factor with regard to the individual hidden idol.
Raro is happy with the reward and heads back to camp.
Adam comes back from a fishing expedition with an octopus wrapped around his ankle. The rest of the tribe seems to be asleep having consumed their reward wine. They peel the octopus from his ankle, thrilled to have the meat. Cristina seems to be running the food show at Camp Raro and starts delegating who will boil the water, who will chop up the octopus. Others are beginning to feel she is taking the JP boss role and don't like it, especially Jenny.
Critina is washing the octopus in salt water at the shoreline. Jenny takes the cutting board and tells Cristina she is going back up to the camp. Then a wave washes in and about half of the chopped octopus escapes into the surf. Cristina is calling for someone to help her and Brad tries to help. He tells her she should be more careful. She replies that she thought Jenny was right there. Uh, Jenny TOLD her she was leaving. Brad goes back up to camp and breaks the news about the lost meat and what Cristina had said. Jenny bristles. "So is she trying to blame ME?"
Adam is really unhappy that he worked hard to get that octopus and then Cristina lost it. That's two tribe members angry with Cristina.
On Aitu, the tribe is talking about an expedition to another island they can see close by. Ozzy feels they are running out of resources on their island and wants to check out the other island for melons, coconuts, and whatever. Ozzy, Cao Boi and Flicka try to get Candace to go but she refuses and they ask Sundra to go. Sundra also refuses. Both Candace and Sundra feel that they are looking for someone to become allies with them and neither woman wants to be in the position of saying no.
The three explorers set off paddling for the other island. While they are gone, Yul, Becky and Candace approach Sundra to be a fifth in the alliance they have with Jonathan. She wonders why they didn't ask Ozzy and Yul admits he doesn't completely trust Ozzy. Sundra isn't sure what she should do, She is happy to be a part of something after feeling like she was alone so far in the game, but she realizes that all of that can change and she would be the newcomer in that alliance and could be dumped.
Ozzy is happy on the other island immediately finding "nonies" For addition information on noni juice, see headaches.about.com/cs/alternative/a/noni_juice.htm.
Ozzy, Cao Boi and Flicka continue across the island and run straight into the camp of the other tribe who are not thrilled at all at hearing the laughter of the opposing tribe as they stumble out of the jungle. Cap Boi greets them cheerfully. The invaded Raro tribe wonders what they other tribe is doing there. They are not happy at all. Adam says it is Raro's turf and he doesn't like them there at all. This isn't helped by Cao Boi launching into a long discourse on Chinese Symbology. He apparently goes on and on and on. Everyone is obviously tired of it. Then Cao Boi says, you guys want to work together and get some coconuts and we'll split them with you. The response "not on OUR island." Cao Boi then asks if they will share some of the reward spices and Raro replies that they worked hard for those spices and no, they aren't sharing. Cao Boi takes it all cheerfully and the three Aitu tribemates depart the Raro Camp.
My Scott says this was really a missed opportunity. Eventually tribes will merge. At this point, neither tribe is assured that they will reach that merge point with a majority. This would have been a great time to greet the three from the other tribe warmly, help them get some coconuts, maybe a little spices. If Raro is in the minority at the time of the merge, those people who helped will be more warmly received and the three from Aitu that were treated so well would be more likely to either flip and vote with the group from Raro or invite some of the nicer folk from Raro into their alliances, or at the very least keep them off the immediate vote off list. Instead, it was a tense moment of "this is our turf, go home." While that position may be valid.....there is a million bucks at stake and being nice never killed anyone.
Jonathan reads the clue to the hidden immunity idol:
To find what you seek,
A charm of great worth,
get in the right spot
and look deep in the earth.
He figures out what the spot is, and he starts to dig. He thinks it was stupid of Raro to send him back here, but he digs day and night creating a huge trench and he finds nothing. He then concludes the idol has been found.
Immunity Challenge
Jonathan returns and Jeff asks him about looking for the idol. He says he spent a lot of time and dug a big hole. Jeff asks if there are enough clues now that he thinks he knows where it should be. Jonathan replies that he thinks he knows where it was but it's not there now. This has now told the Raro tribe that someone who has already been to the island probably has the idol. He probably should have kept that to himself, but he doesn't realize one of his tribemates has the idol.
The first part of the challenge is to assemble "stepping poles" that consist of logs that fit together and have a smallish round platform at the top. Each tribe will select two tribe members to climb to the top of a platform out in the water. Then the tribe will hold these stepping poles to allow the two selected tribe members to walk from one to the other from the platform they are on to another platform further out in the ocean. To do this, the tribe must take the pole in back and move it to the front to extend the path from one platform to another.
Next, after both of the platform tribemates have made the stepping pole journet to the second platform, the rest of the tribe must climb up on that platform. When all tribe members are on the platform, they must dive and swim to a third platform. This third platform is much taller and much much smaller than the first two platforms. In fact, the top is about 18 inches square. The entire tribe must climb that tower and manage to get all tribe members on or above the platform. There is no way for all of them to stand on the platform so some of them will have to be hoisted up and held on shoulders or hauled up and held up briefly to complete the challenge. First tribe to complete wins immunity.
There are three stepping poles to be constructed. Aitu seems better at these cooperative things and they are in the water first. Raro follows behind them, only a few seconds later. Jenny is first on the poles for Raro and Flicka is first up for Aitu. Jenny is using a low center of gravity technique, squatting on the top of the pole, and Aitu's Flicka stands and balances. Aitu quickly decides to use only two poles to allow more tribe members to hold up the two remaining poles. Raro soon follows suit. Jenny is first to the platform and Raro returns to get Pavarti. Aitu finally gets Flicka across and Becky is next. She is squatting close to the platform on the pole. Aitu makes up a lot of ground but Raro leads by a hair.
Pavarti finishes stage one first, but Aitu is right behind them. Raro seems to be close to finishing getting all of their people up the little tower but they are not able to bet the last person up and the entire tribe falls into the water. Cao Boi falls off on the Aitu tower but the others manage to stay up. It is literally down to one foot on the Aitu side and they manage to pull that last foot up and win immunity.
Raro congratulates themselves on a good effort, but the looming tribal council is on everyone's mind. They are starting to talk about Cristina as a possibility. They think she doesn't really perform well around the camp. Stephanie and Nate go after water and Stephanie says she feels it will either be herself or Cristina. Nate tells her it won't be her. She says "I could see myself going home and getting some mashed potatoes and gravey....hahaha." Nate's head whips around and he says "what did you say?"
Nate takes this conversation as Stephanie saying what she really wants is to go home and eat mashed potatoes and gravy. He thinks this means she has quit caring about the game. He thinks this is really dumb. He says it was icing on the cake. Nate gets with Adam and Brad and tells them about the conversation. He says he knows that Jenny wants to vote out Cristina but he thinks Stephanie doesn't really want to be there, based on the potatoes and gravy comment (PGC as it will hereinafter be referred to). Next we see Brad telling Pavarti that Stephanie wants to go home because of her PGC. Pavarti goes to Stephanie and asks her about the PGC. Stephanie says that was taken totally out of context. If I was Stephanie I would have gotten everyone together and say, I was MAKING A JOKE. She says she does want to be there but she's not going to beg anyone. I think for a million bucks, I could beg.
So the PGC continues to be discussed ad nauseum. If there were really any kind of mystical magic at work out there on the island, the chanting of P&G P&G would surely summon a big old pile of P&G out there on the island to erupt gravy like a volcano. Pavarti says she will vote her conscience.
Jeff tells the tribe that they are not doing very well as they are back at tribal council. Adam, claims they were dominating at the challenge at the end. He's delusional, they had a slight lead. Brad says he likes everyone. Sundra says she has no close bonds with anyone. Nate says that Cristina has moved into the JP position and is somewhat overbearing and overpowering and it rubs people the wrong way. Cristina says maybe it's because she's a policewoman and she apologizes for irritating or offending anyone. Adam says the tribe is mostly honest and that no, Cristina is just bossy. Sundra says that this is very very honest and that hopefully it will make them better when they get back to camp.
Jeff does the hidden idol lecture and they vote.
Votes for Stephanie:
Cristina
Jenny
Nate
Adam
Pavarti
Brad
Sundra
Votes for Cristina
Stephanie
Stephanie leaves quietly and Jeff tells the tribe he hopes this helps them get going in a new direction.
Next week:
Cristina is shocked and hurt by the things said about her at tribal council. Cao Boi still seems to be getting on the nerves of the tribe. Two people get voted out next week as both tribes must go to tribal council.
