At the Bachelorette house in the Hollywood Hills, host Chris explains the rules for the week: There will be two group dates and one individual date. No roses will be handed out on the group dates, but one lucky Bachelorette will get to stay and spend more time with Andy. Since Stephanie from South Carolina got the first rose, the first individual date will also be hers. On that date, Andy will decide whether to give her another rose and if he doesn't, she'll be on the next flight home so she has to pack her bags beforehand.
The first date box arrives. Inside are invitations for Nicole, Tiffany, Alexis, Stephanie from Kansas, Bevin, Amanda and Tessa. The note reads, "Let's find love on the Sunset Strip."
Andy is excited for his first date, declaring, "Operation Soulmate is about to begin!"
The ladies all board a bus and drink champagne while cruising the Sunset Strip. They stop at the Saddle Ranch Chop House where the women take turns riding the mechanical bull. Tessa falls off and pretends she's hurt her leg to get Andy's attention.
Stephanie from Kansas, the gymnast who did flips the first night, is the only one who doesn't fall off, which impresses Andy and he gives her a big hug. He's thinking of asking her to be the one to stay at the end of the date.
The next stop is a hotel on the Strip, where Andy shows them into a room with dozens of gorgeous evening dresses. He instructs them to each pick out one.
Andy is waiting on the roof, where an elegant buffet is laid out. He's blown away when the women show up, saying they exceeded his wildest expectations. They marvel at the lights of Hollywood, laid out below them, and Andy toasts them.
Nicole tells him how nervous she is, which surprises him. They start to dance and Andy knows it might be making the other women jealous, but he's just giving Nicole her time alone with him.
Alexis asks the other women how they feel about kissing on the first date and they mostly say it depends on the connection. Stephanie from Kansas advises her that it's just a kiss and it doesn't matter when it happens, leading Alexis to fret that the all other girls are more aggressive than her.
Alone with Alexis, Andy asks her about what it was like being home schooled. She says she has no regrets. Afterwards, Andy says he respects her strong, conservative morals. He tells her he's "conservative, yet open-minded" and that what he values most is family and living each day to the fullest.
The women discover the hot tub, so Andy suggests they all get in their bathing suits. He loved their dresses, but he's excited to see them in bikinis! He's waiting for them in a T-shirt and swim trunks and Nicole yells, "Take it off. Let's see!" The women come over and aren't shy about running their hands over his muscles. "It doesn't get any better than that," he says, about being in a hot tub with seven women, under the stars on the Sunset Strip.
Andy realizes he hasn't had any time alone with Bevin yet, so he grabs her hand and leads her to the pool. The other women quickly realize that this one-on-one time is much more touchy-feely than theirs was! Andy and Bevin go underwater, to make out, the others suspect, so Amanda decides they all need to join them in the pool.
At the house, a duffel bag arrives with a note for Kate, Susan, Erin, Tina, Amber, Danielle, and Peyton to "show their athletic side, poolside."
Back in the hot tub, Andy announces that he's chosen Tiffany to stay after the group date. Bevin seems the most disappointed being passed over.
Andy explains he chose Tiffany because she's shyer than the rest so he wanted to "give her the opportunity to shine." They take a limo to a lookout point in the Hollywood Hills. He prompts her to ask him some questions and she asks why he picked her. He later admits that he had to work too hard to keep the conversation going, and that he doesn't think the chemistry is there.
The second group date is at a hotel on the beach in Santa Monica. Andy greets them in coach mode with a whistle around his neck. He says first they should eat breakfast because they're going to need their energy.
Tina schemes to get Andy alone, so she asks if he'll show her the Santa Monica pier. A ticked-off Kate proclaims, "I think she's a hussy!" and points out that the two didn't even go to the pier, but to a nearby table to talk.
Tina says she's getting an MBA and Andy tells her he wants to go back and get a degree in orthopedics. She tells him she preferred hanging out with the orthopedic surgeons she's met to girls who only have things like shopping on their minds. Andy tells her he can relate best with her so far.
Susan and Erin band together to interrupt Andy's alone time with Tina. Privately, he calls them "the identical twins" and wonders if they're going to be willing to get their hair and makeup messed up. Erin tells Andy she likes drinking beer with the guys while Susan says she's not a beer fan and prefers red wine.
Back at the house, Stephanie from South Carolina gets her date instructions delivered in a giant shell. The note reads, "Come dine with me on my yacht under the stars." Tessa asks if they're going to make out under the stars and Stephanie says if the opportunity comes up, she won't turn it down.
Back at the beach, Andy announces that he's brought them here to do a mini triathlon. Erin in particular is not pleased, saying to the camera she doesn't think she needs to literally win a race to get a rose.
Andy lays out the challenge: First they'll swim four laps in the pool, then ride two miles on stationary spin bikes, then run five laps around the pool.
Susan and Erin decide to stick together and walk their laps so they don't have to get their hair wet, even though Andy yells "No walking" and "No holding hands" at them. Susan says privately that they know they're the least athletic and just hopes that Andy thinks it's "kind of cute."
Kate is the first out of the pool and first to hit the bikes but Danielle is the first to finish on the bike. Amber, who's been training for a marathon, is second, but quickly passes up Danielle, so Amber is the winner of the First Bachelor Triathlon. Danielle is second and Kate finishes third. Meanwhile, Susan and Erin end up leisurely walking off their laps together in last place.
Amber has also won alone time with Andy, who says he loves that she's up for anything. At the beach, they do pull-ups and play on the gymnastic rings. From the hotel, the women watch the pair on the swings, trying to determine if they're kissing or not. Andy and Amber stroll down to the surf and watch the waves roll in. She says she cooks every night for her roommate and he says he likes to do dishes, so they have a deal.
Stephanie asks the other women to help her choose her outfit for her yacht date and the other women are shocked at how low cut and revealing one of them is. They encourage her to choose the more tasteful of the dresses. Stephanie says she's "95 percent sure" she'll get a rose tonight.
Andy tells her she looks amazing when she arrives, wearing the more tasteful dress, and welcomes her to his yacht. He points out the hot tub and brings her to the bow, where a bucket of champagne is waiting. They toast and then set sail. They stand on the bow of the boat and have a laugh copying the Titanic "I'm flying" stance.
He says he liked her confidence right away and hopes that by picking her, he didn't make her the target of the other women's animosity. She says she can handle it.
Back at the house, Bevin wonders what's going on right now on the date, saying she hopes Stephanie is getting seasick. They all agree that rose or no rose, Stephanie will definitely get a kiss in before the evening's over. They list why they don't like her, including how smug she was about winning the first rose and how thoroughly she's researched Andy's likes and dislikes.
Meanwhile, Stephanie asks Andy what his ideal wedding would be. He says he thinks it would be fun to have a Hawaiian wedding. She says she prefers small weddings to big ones. "All right," he jokes, "we're having a small wedding!"
After dinner, Stephanie joins him in the hot tub. He takes the rose and asks if she knows what the stakes are: Either she stays or she goes. And then he asks if she'll accept the rose and she kisses him. Later, she boasts that she got the first rose, the first date and the first kiss. "I feel incredible! Everything is working out perfectly."
Alone in the limo, she clutches her rose and screams, "He's awesome! I can't wait to see him again." Some of the other Bachelorettes are waiting up for her. They ask her how the date went and she tells them about dinner and the rose but when asked if she got a kiss, she lies and says it was only on the cheek. Stephanie overhears them calling her a liar and goes to her room alone, obviously upset.
In the mixer prior to the next rose ceremony, Tina tells Andy she has a "strong suspicion" that he's going to send her home since guys in the past have considered her too ambitious. He assures her he thinks she's not only bright but beautiful, but privately wonders why she's so insecure.
Peyton tells Andy she's always having to defend her job as a sorority recruiter but that she's passionate about changing people's lives. He says he respects her being a mentor and that he's looking for someone who wants a family, someone with integrity and someone who wants to inspire others. She's thrilled when he tells her she has all those qualities.
A group of Bachelorettes are discussing what Andy's "type" is and Stephanie from South Carolina says she thinks he likes the "innocent, virginal" type. Privately, she says she's sure that Alexis is a virgin. Stephanie asks Alexis, "You think there's a virgin in the group? Who do you think it is?" But Alexis doesn't take the bait.
To the camera, Alexis admits she has conservative views on marriage and sex but that she also feels strongly that it's a private matter. Andy asks her about her last she serious relationship was and she says she was once engaged but she called it off because divorce isn't an option for her.
Susan and Erin show up wearing nearly matching red dresses and holding hands! Privately, Nicole pronounces them "Barbie, Ken, Barbie," when they sit down with Andy. Susan declares to Andy that she and Erin are "soulmates" or at least "soul sisters." Erin knows she's not in a good position, having finished last in the triathlon, but privately hope she's not going home just yet.
Amber pulls Andy aside and he admits she's the person whom he's most been looking forward to seeing. She takes him upstairs and shows him around the house. During the tour, he sees that they've all had to pack and be ready to go home before the rose ceremony and he feels bad that he's going to have to send three women home.
Tessa tells Andy she's training for a triathlon when she gets back home and they realize they'll be at the same race, so she laughs that if this doesn't work out, she'll see him there. She offers him a foot massage and they end up massaging each other's feet, which is a little awkward when Alexis and Stephanie from Kansas come in to share some drinks with them.
Next is Danielle, who's anxious to make sure Andy knows more about her than about the late boyfriend she mentioned in their first chat. She says she's a graphic designer and that she loves that all she needs to do her job is her computer. He suggests that there'd be nothing stopping her from moving to Hawaii then, and she happily agrees. Later, he admits he's felt a connection to her from the beginning.
Bevin asks to steal Andy away since she didn't get any solo time with him on the group date. She tells him she's been on her own since she was 15 and that she's looking for "the one," but that you have to have your own life before you settle down. She crosses her fingers she'll end up with a rose.
Andy takes Nicole outside by the pool, calling her "the girl that I like to spin," and they dance again. "Is dancing our thing? Is this what we do?" she asks him and he says he thinks it is. She tells the camera that "it doesn't get any better than this," but that she'd like to get back a moment where they almost kissed.
Tessa realizes she's spending more time talking about Andy than being with him and flees the party. Peyton finds her crying upstairs in the bathroom. She says nothing happened, she's just homesick and tired of this competition. Privately, she says it would almost be a relief not to get a rose.
Host Chris arrives and announces it's time for Andy to hand out the remaining 11 roses. Andy says he came to he house with a clear idea of who was going home and after tonight's conversations, he has no idea.
Andy gives out roses to:
Tessa
Danielle
Bevin
Amber
Stephanie from Kansas
Kate, who makes everyone laugh when she says, "Shut up!"
Nicole
Tina
Peyton
Amanda
Erin
Which means that Alexis, Susan and Tiffany are going home. Tiffany is puzzled that she didn't get a rose after her solo date and Alexis says she's disappointed, but neither woman seems all that upset. Susan is sorry that Andy didn't get to see the real her and says it's "emotional" saying goodbye to the other women.
