Why Aren't You Swimming
For the record, I still think kidnapping Nate instead of Cristina was a missed opportunity of huge proportions. They could have thrown the Raro tribe into complete disarray.
Hanging out at Aitu gives Nate the chance to get an idea of what is going on with the other tribe. Jessica elects to discuss the removal of Cao Boi and her being out of the loop in front of Nate which makes the others of her tribe very concerned. Yul's alliance with Becky and Candace discusses their order of eviction and they are talking about Ozzy, Jessica, Jonathan and finally Sundra, but they are also aware that there is probably a merge on the horizon. They are placing Ozzy first because he is by far the most talented swimmer, fisherman, coconut gatherer, etc. He is a formidable opponent on any challenge. They realize that Jonathan is a fierce competitor and that moves him into position to be dumped in front of Sundra but an impending merge may move him further up the boot list.
Is anyone else just dying to see that new movie "Happy Feet"? I actually like to watch that commercial every time.
Reward Challenge
Swim, fly, dive, think
Either way you are in the drink
Browse this catalog and just pick two
They could be yours by the time you're through.
They have a catalog with pictures of various items that they can win as reward. They can pick two items. Items include things like spice collections, sewing kits, various food items. Raro discusses the catalog and they want peanut butter and bread. Brad is saying they would be better off taking peanut butter and potatoes because the potatoes would last longer, provide a good source of carbohydrates over the next couple weeks, would go well with seafood, etc. Adam and Parvati fight for bread to make peanut butter sandwiches. Brad is overruled.
Each tribe must select three swimmers and two puzzle makers. There are six clubs. A swimmer must take the club and swim out to a platform where they must climb up and jump off using the club to smash a box that is suspended out over the water. The box contains a key on a long ribbon. The swimmer must collect the key by finding it where it has fallen into the ocean and return it to the starting point. When all six keys are retrieved, using each swimmer at least once and retrieving only one key at a time, they must use the keys to open a chest that is locked by six locks. Inside the chest are puzzle pieces that can be used to reconstruct a map of the world. The first tribe to complete the puzzle will win the reward they have selected, two items from the catalog.
Raro, as we have already learned chose peanut butter and bread. Aitu, wisely has chosen peanut butter and potatoes.
Aitu selects to sit Jessica, Sundra and Nate out. Jeff notes that they have chosen to kidnap Nate to keep him from competing for his tribe but they don't trust him competing for themselves. The winning tribe will also win the opportunity to send someone from the losing tribe to exile island.
Aitu chooses Ozzy, Candace and Yul to swim for their tribe, leaving Becky and Jonathan to complete the puzzle. Brad surprises the Raro tribe by saying he will NOT swim but work on the puzzle with Jenny while Rebecca, Parvati and Adam swim. Rebecca and Ozzy are the first in the water. Ozzy throws his club out in the water and swims to it and develops a huge lead. He is back with his key before Rebecca is up on the platform. Yul heads out. Rebecca cannot find her key in the water and struggles swimming back to land while Yul returns with Aitu's second key.
Nate, sitting out the challenge asks Brad why he is not swimming and he replies that he is better at puzzles. Rebecca exhausted returns finally, without a key and her swimsuit top up around her neck. Candace meanwhile cannot find her key. This gives Adam a chance to head out and get Rebecca's key. Ozzy goes out to get Candace's key but it is still in the partially broken box. Unfortunately he took no club with him but he climbs the platform anyway and manages to break the box with his fist releasing the key. This has cost Aitu a lot of time. Yul is back out quickly. Adam now has a third key for Raro as Yul brings back the fourth key for Aitu. Parvati is quick and soon has the fourth Raro key and Candace keeps up by snagging the fifth key. Ozzy is after key number 6 for Aitu as Adam brings back the fifth key for Raro.
Aitu is now ready to unlock the box and get the puzzle pieces. Parvati is still swimming but the box she hits doesn't break and release the key so she has to climb and jump a second time. She manages to do this and is heading back to shore but it's too late....Jonathan and Becky complete the puzzle. Nate is returned to the Raro tribe and Aitu sends Adam to exile island. Aitu takes their peanut butter and potatoes and heads back to camp.
The Aitu tribe celebrates eating peanut butter off their fingers. Candace and Jessica kiss peanut butter off each other's lips. Everyone seems really happy and at peace. Things aren't so happy back at Raro. Nate hugs Rebecca and says, "you stepped up to the plate and gave what you got." He says he is frustrated because he couldn't do anything. Brad says that he sat back to work on the puzzle and did not swim because he felt his tribe often choked at the end on the puzzles after dominating the swimming and physical part of the challenges. This strategy actually makes sense even though it didn't work in this instance, largely because with Nate kidnapped and sidelined by the other tribe, it left only Rebecca as the third swimmer and she is not as strong as even Parvati and certainly no match for the strong swimmers on Aitu like Ozzy and Yul.
Nate is convinced Brad was just laying back because it was a cold rainy morning or something. Obviously, they needed Brad as a swimmer on this challenge, but Brad's philosophy was sound as Raro has choked on puzzles in the past and lost by brain rather than brawn. The tribe in general is upset with Brad. Nate is out fishing and complaining that he must do this because Brad let the tribe down.
Adam is really unhappy out on exile island. He's griping about how his tribe just lets him down all the time. He says (and I kid you not, he actually said this..) "It's hard to soar like an eagle when you work with turkeys." I never like people who quote the little signs that get faxes all over and that is one of the original little fax things that makes the rounds every so often. He gets paid back for his trite remark by a HUGE thunder and lightning storm that literally hammers exile island. There was rain and wind that made the rain feel like bullets.
Ozzy catches a bird, a pretty good sized gull. They discuss whether to let it go away or to kill it and eat it. He says it was in the bushes and he just crept up on it and grabbed it. I am not sure how safe it is for them to eat a scavenger bird but apparently, there is no prohibition on bird killing in Cook Islands so they have gull for breakfast. Ozzy also provides everyone with fish and coconuts. He's pretty amazing. Yul says that Ozzy provides a lot of food but they still feel they should get rid of him before any merge while they have control and before Ozzy is able to dominate in individual immunity challenges.
Ozzie talks to Candace and Jessica. They worry about Jonathan's constant strategizing. Ozzy says that he feels he is more valuable than Jonathan. He is hoping that the girls will stick with him to be able to eat and enjoy the ride more out on the island.
Immunity Challenge
Adam returns for exile island and Jeff comments on the fact that he had the worst night ever out there by himself. Yul is wearing his glasses.
They must race to arrange a series of poles of different lengths upright in a series of holes. The poles must be arranged shortest to tallest and when they are all in the right place they will form a staircase up to a tower. Three tribe members must then travel down a zip line from that platform to a platform out in the ocean. They must drop into the water and retrieve a bag of puzzle pieces and swim back to shore. Then the next person goes. When all three bags are retrieved and brought back to the top of the tower, the three remaining tribe members must assemble the puzzle pieces. The first tribe to complete their puzzles will receive immunity.
Aitu has to sit someone out so Jonathan is sidelined.
The logs are heavy. The women are dragging them to the holes. Then Jeff says my favorite survivor line ever.....
"The women are doing a lot of the work for Raro. They are building it from the bottom up while the guys debate which is the longest log." Sorry but that's priceless.
Aitu, as usual, seems to have better team skills. Ozzy puts in the last log and they are up the staircase. Yul is the first down the zip line. He has the first bag of puzzle pieces as Raro is finally up the tower and Brad is down the zip line. Candace is down the zip line for Aitu, who still has a good lead. Parvati is out for Raro and grabs a bag. Candace is back and Ozzy hits the zip line tucking himself up like a monkey and really FLIES down the line. Raro is losing time on the swimming leg while Ozzy swims like a dolphin back to shore. Nate imitates Ozzy's pose on the zip line and recoups a little time but the Raro tribe is still behind.
Aitu is the first to start on the puzzle. They have to climb a rope ladder to get up to the puzzle base. Soon Raro is working on their puzzle as well. Becky, Sundra and Jessica work well together, but Adam, Jenny and Rebecca are faster. Raro wins immunity just seconds before Aitu.
Back at Aitu camp, Jonathan says at least it was close and not like Raro handed them their asses. Ozzy is slightly worried but really doesn't think he will go home. Jessica seems to be asking too many questions, probably because she was blind sided by the vote for Cao Boi. Candace says that Jonathan is on the cusp of the alliance because he is strategizing too much. Jessica is trying really hard to be close to all the girls, telling Sundra she doesn't want to be an outsider. It's beginning to annoy people. She tells Yul, Becky and Ozzy that she is confident the tribe can win challenges without Jonathan. Ozzy says, if none of us trust him, why is he still here?
Jonathan, Sundra and Candace discuss the situation out at the beach. Jonathan says that Ozzy is just really good at the challenges and that he does provide a lot of food and that probably they should vote out Jessica.
Ozzy and Yul talk and Ozzy says that Jonathan is always asking questions but never gives any information and that he doesn't trust him much. Yul admits he doesn't trust him completely. Jessica is convinced that most of them will vote for Jonathan.
Jeff asks about ethnicity and what part it might have played in the game. Jonathan says that bonds are based on personalities and not ethnicity. Sundra says you can't plan who you will bond with, that it just happens with people who have common ground. Jessica says they are all friendly but that there are some groups that become closer. She likes to fish with Ozzy. Yul and Jonathan like to go clamming. Jeff says that Jessica never seems to have any issues with anyone. Yul says that she can always be taken at face value.
Ozzy talks about being the provider. He says he hopes he makes his tribe fat, but that there may come a time when it is perceived as a threat, but that if that is how he is voted out, that is a pretty good way to go.
Jessica votes for Jonathan.
Jonathan votes for Jessica. So does, Yul, Candace, Sundra, and Becky.
Next week, Brad is on the outs with his tribe and a surprise twist gives the tribe 10 seconds to decide something that will change their fate in the game.
Jessica said it was the adventure of a lifetime and that she might not have played the game as hard as she might have but she really couldn't change who she was. She's rooting for Ozzy to win.
