People That You Like Want to See You Suffer
Once again in the recap section, we are reminded how Jonathan and Candace, the two white members of Aitu betrayed their tribe to join Raro. We then get to relive the joyous irony of Aitu kicking butt on both reward and immunity challenges. Brad is the first member of the jury.
Jonathan is working himself to death trying to solidify his place in the Raro tribe. He realizes he has made the game much harder for himself but he hopes it turns out to be a good thing. Adam and Candace are reconnecting in a big way. She feels she has been separated by the time on exile island but she trusts Adam because he looks at her with that "I want you even if you stink and can braid your armpits" look.
Jenny is concerned about Candace, because she is depending on the Nate, Adam, Rebecca, Parvati, Jenny alliance to keep her going. Parvati says that Candace and Adam are like the all American couple, whatever that means. Jenny feels that Candace could make Adam falter, and she's right. Adam is having long talks and hand holding sessions with Candace talking about how they trust each other and he actually kisses her wounds to make them better. Yes, I said HE KISSES HER WOUNDS TO MAKE THEM BETTER.
Aitu, Day 22. Ozzy says that they are in a deep hole, but that he is totally happy being the underdog tribe. Tree mail is a code, a nautical flag code with letters represented by flag patterns. They immediately start cramming and working as a team, each of them memorizing the letters of code.
Reward Challenge
When the tribes line up on their mats, Jeff points out that Brad has been voted off. Yul is noticeably upset. Jeff informs Aitu that Brad became the first member of the jury. This is also met with surprise.
The challenge requires the tribes to run out in pairs to a huge compass laid out in the sand and using a hand held compass determine where the points are on the big compass. They are given the first set of coordinates and must run to that point on the compass and dig down to find a treasure chest. They then bring that chest back to their mat. The chest is tied shut. The top of the chest is labeled with the next position on the compass where a chest is buried. There are four chest buried at varying points on the compass. Each tribe is working on a different compass and different positions for the chests. When all four chests are collected on the mat, they must then open the chests and retrieve puzzle pieces, squares with various flag patterns painted on them, representing letters. These are from the code the received in tree mail. They must line the squares up in a tray spelling out the word "VICTORY" to win.
The winning tribe will be flown to a neighboring island to participate in an Umu, featuring roasted pork (pig roasted underground) fresh fruit and home brew which is sort of like wine made locally. And one member of the losing tribe will be chosen to go to exile island.
All of Aitu must compete. Rebecca, Nate and Parvati sit out for Raro. The first pairs are Yul and Sundra vs. Jonathan and Jenny. Jeff gives them the following coordinates. Aitu: East North East. Raro: North North West. Jonathan starts digging at North North East while his tribe argues from the mat that it's North North West. Yul and Sundra find their first chest. Jenny is sort of standing around looking confused and digging at a different spot on the compass. Yul and Sundra are back with the first chest while the Jonathan and Jenny continue to founder. Becky and Ozzy are out and have their second chest almost out of the hole when the first chest is back for Raro. Candace and Adam are confused reading the compass. Yul and Sundra are working on the third Aitu chest while Adam and Candace are slowly extracting the chest from the hole. Jonathan and Jenny try to run out before Candace and Adam are back to the mat and must go back and start over. Candace notes sadly that Aitu is working on their fourth chest while Raro only has two. Jenny and Jonathan seem to be shoving more sand into the hole than they are taking out.
Aitu has their chests untied and the flag tiles out. Jonathan and Jenny drag out the third chest and Candace and Adam are sort of slowly digging (Jeff says in slow motion) as Aitu quickly solves the puzzle and wins reward. Challenge number three for the "little tribe that could." They send Candace back to exile. She will have spent about 24 hours with the tribe she had to mutiny to rejoin and three of the last four days on exile island. She's bummed.
Candace walks slowly through the surf to her exile. She's tearful as she says she knows she will be okay, but she says it's not fun to know that people that you like want to see you suffer. She hopes it's a character building experience.
Aitu boards a small plane. Ozzy says he really feels like his tribe deserves this win, that they come to the challenges humble, vowing to do their best. They are met at the Umu by a chief calling out a greeting. The tribe members are placed in pole chairs and hoisted onto the shoulders of the natives who burst into really fabulous song. There is dancing and they are brought in as victorious warriors to the feast area. The pig is uncovered, buried under leaves in the ground. They are brought food and served drinks in coconuts. The islanders are reaching out to them, the little children are adorable, the food is fabulous. Yul really enjoys himself, saying this is the first time he has felt really free. He is then seduced into dancing with two rather rotund island women who sandwich him. Ozzy mentions that Yul is an intense, intellectual guy and to see him come out of his shell was amazing. Good time is had by all.
Time out for a personal comment here. During this reward feast, I couldn't help but compare the reactions of the Aitu tribe to what I think the reactions would have been on the Raro tribe. Aitu seems so genuine in its joy. There's none of the "oooo, baby" looks like you passed back and forth on Raro. Aitu approaches this feast like one huge smile, happy, relaxed, grateful. Everyone gets a little silly, but nobody becomes sloppy or obnoxious drunk. Maybe it's my own personal bias, but I have a feeling the Raro tribe would have been a different situation entirely.
Ozzy mentions again how the four people on Aitu came together and have really become a solid force. They get to experience a totally new culture and renew their enthusiasm for the next challenge. I might add he is cute as a button while saying this.
Raro is hanging out in the shelter talking about whether it's cold or not and how the air smells like "wet cat". Well, everyone except Jonathan. He's working. He believes that he can lead by example and get the tribe working together as a group. He feels that the tribe is not winning because they haven't really come together as a tribe yet.
Immunity Challenge
Tree Mail:
Any explorer knows
To study about where he goes.
Disappointment shows
And for the losers...the "Tribal Council Woes".
They are presented with a map of the Islands of the Pacific. They have to study the names of the islands. Jenny is already talking about sending Rebecca home because of her performance in recent challenges and lack of work ethic at the camp.
The tribes arrive at the challenge and Candace returns from exile island all cheerful and happy (a show for Aitu). Jeff mentions how much time she is spending in isolation, but she says she is staying strong.
There are four pontoons out in the water. Each of the four competitors in the challenge must swim out to a pontoon and dive down to unhook a bag with wooden plaques with the names of islands on them. Then they must swim back to the mat. When all four bags are collected, they must face a map with numbers by various islands. They must place the island names in a rack in the order of the numbers, naming the islands correctly to win the challenge.
The losing tribe will receive a bottle with a note in it. The bottle must remain sealed and they must bring it to tribal council to be opened after the vote.
Raro must sit out three members that competed in the reward challenge, and the remaining three members, Nate, Rebecca, Parvati will compete. Jonathan will also compete for Raro.
Nate and Ozzy are the first swimmers. Nate is strong, but there's just no comparison to Ozzy. Ozzy is up with the names and on his way back when Nate finally reaches his pontoon. Nate has to dive more than once. Raro is quickly behind. Nate is starting back as Ozzy reaches the mat sending Yul out to the next pontoon. Yul is back up with the second bundle quickly as Nate stumbles back up on shore. Jonathan is out as Becky starts out for the third bag. Jonathan is quick and picks up some time on Becky's swim. Parvati is a strong swimmer and is trying to make up time. Becky has the third bag but Parvati is back up only seconds later. Sundra heads out for the last pontoon, as an exhausted Parvati stumbles back up on shore. Rebecca is having trouble diving down for the bundle as Sundra comes back with the last of the puzzle pieces. Finally Rebecca is on her way back as the Aitu tribe begins solving the puzzle, identifying the items. Now both tribes are working on the puzzle and Aitu finishes. Jeff stops everyone to check their answers and declares them the winner. Jeff congratulates them on their forth straight win.
Jeff gives the bottle to Raro telling them to keep it sealed and bring it to tribal council where it will be opened after the vote.
Candace speculates that the note in the bottle says that they will not merge, maybe live on the same beach and compete individually, but still not merge. Adam think it's definitely a merge announcement.
The tribe is leaning toward voting out Rebecca. She isn't contributing a lot in camp and she doesn't perform well in the challenges, so Jenny feels that it's time to break up their five person alliance (Jenny, Nate, Adam, Rebecca and Parvati). Adam tells Candace that Jenny actually wants either Candace or Jonathan to go. They agree to vote out Rebecca and Adam says that Jenny won't be a threat until after this vote. Adam, wanting to protect Candace from the supposed Jenny threat, wants Jenny to be the next to go.
Nate, meanwhile, feels that Rebecca is family and while he wonders about her performance and contribution to the tribe, he is not happy about voting out a member of the "family" and keeping Jonathan and Candace, primarily Jonathan.
Jonathan says he things he may have worked himself safe, having caught tons of fish and getting coconuts, etc. He is also curious about when the bottle will be opened, after vote, before reveal, after reveal. They all agree they have no way to know.
They arrive at tribal council and Brad, the first member of the jury is brought in. Jeff then talks about the lack of success in challenges the tribe has had. Jenny says she can't pinpoint what the problem is, but she thinks it must have to do somehow with division of responsibilities matching to the various strong points and skills of the individuals in the tribe. Rebecca says they have to move forward, everyone goes out crabbing, clamming, octopussing (is that a word) and Jonathan interrupts to say he caught 22 fish. Parvati admits that Jonathan has been nourishing them help them perform in the tribe and that he is a big part of the tribe right now. Jeff asks Adam if the trust issues have been overcome and Adam does one of those professional jock speeches about how he's tired of losing and he is for anything that makes them strong so the vote for him is about productivity.
Parvati has the bottle, still sealed.
They vote. Rebecca votes for Jonathan and the rest of the tribe votes for Rebecca. Shots of Rebecca as the votes are being cast show a look on her face that tells me she KNOWS she is going. It's almost like, "let's get this over with so I can go shower." She looks exhausted. I'm thinking she may have just become so worn out, she doesn't care.
Jeff reads the votes and Rebecca walks numbly up to have her torch snuffed and plods off down the path without a single look back.
Jeff asks them if they have any consensus as to what the note in the bottle may be. Parvati says "a merge, right guys" but there is rumbling from the tribe and she says "well, really, we don't know." She adds she hopes it's a big buffet, and Adam says ice cream.
She reads the note:
"You just voted out one member of your tribe. You will now vote out another."
They are stunned. Parvati's smile freezes on her face like a grimace as she complains, "That's not fun."
Jeff says that it's obviously not a merge. In fact, not only are they not merging tonight, they are voting out another member. Jeff adds there is no sign of a merge and while it may be tomorrow, it may never happen. He tells Adam, now you are five and they are four, what criteria will you use to make your decision now. Adam replies that while Rebecca stood out as unproductive, that can't be said about any of the other members of the tribe so this vote will be very hard. Jonathan, meanwhile is aghast, thinking he is the most likely target for an impromptu vote.
They vote and scary piratey music plays in the background instead of the usual voting music:
Jonathan has 2 votes. Jenny has 4 votes. Jenny and Nate voted for Jonathan, the rest of the tribe voted for Jenny. She is stunned. Jonathan is immensely relieved. Jeff suggests that maybe this was the wake up call the tribe needed.
Raro now consists of Jonathan, Candace, Adam, Parvati and Nate. Four of the original "white" tribe and one African American. Aitu consists of one Hispanic, one African American and two Asians. Is this back to race again?
Next week Jonathan gets tired of doing all the work telling the tribe he's not willing to lose because "you kids can't get your asses out of bed." Yul shares a secret with Ozzy (the immunity idol, I presume) and Adam and Candace are getting really cozy.
