Why Would You Trust Me?
Oh that gnarly little bottle. This week's revisit to last week's episode starts with that little bottle with its innocent looking little note. Of course, we know now that it wasn't so innocent and resulted in Jenny being sent home in a double eviction from the Raro tribe following Rebecca down the path of shame. The tribes now stand at 5 to 4, advantage Raro. Adam and Candace have reconnected, Aitu is hammering Raro on all of the challenges and apparently still holds a grudge against Candace for her mutiny. Jonathan has to feel like he has dodged a cannon ball at this point.
Raro, Day 25. Jonathan is up early, fishing. He has found that the fish are more active and available in the morning. He still isn't sure about his position in the tribe but he knows that three people have gone home before he and Candace and he's still the main source of food, fire and general work as the rest are not exactly gung ho on the work ethic thing. The young people like to sleep in. Jonathan may be getting a little thingyy though as he starts in saying that the tribe is going to have to start paying attention to him. This doesn't sit well at all with Nate who still feels Jonathan is an outsider. Jonathan is still talking too much to Candace, discussing his feelings about how the tribe is supposed to work.
I gotta say that the new comedy with Ben Stiller, Night at the Museum, looks really funny. The Ellen Degeneres commercial for American Express is too cute, it really is.
But back to the jungle. Aitu is feeling good about their performance but Yul is in some pain. He says that the challenges are taking a toll on him. Sundra has a nasty knee wound. She says they are still the underdogs and must prove themselves each and every day, all the time. They are surprised to arrive at the next challenge and see the new Raro down two members. Jeff points out that if Aitu had lost, the tribes would be 7 to 2.
Jeff then reveals paint, brushes and material for a new flag, and of course, new buffs. The merge is happening now. Raro is relieved it is happening before they lose their numbers advantage. They discuss the number of coconuts and rats at the camp sites and decide to live on Raro beach because it has no rats. There is a catamaran off shore offering a feast to celebrate the merge, complete with tribal entertainment and alcohol. For now, they all rejoice.
Yul tells everyone that he's really looking forward to getting to know the people he has not been on a tribe with. Everyone responds telling him he has class. They are glad to be merged, but Yul knows they are still divided into two groups and his group is one man down. They are wondering if there is anyone they can turn, a chink in the armor.
Nate and Adam proceed to eat so much and drink so much they are vomiting off the side of the vote. Jonathan is horrified. He says he is there to win A MILLION DOLLARS and that is just NOT the way to take part in a competition. He thinks they are psychos.
The boat drops them off at Raro beach. They have renamed the tribe Aitutonga. Nate says he is glad that his tribe is certain to stay together. He is tight with Parvati and Adam and there is no way the other tribe would accept Jonathan or Candace after their mutiny. Also, Nate really likes Ozzy. Ozzy made friends with Nate when he was kidnapped by Aitu and he's hoping that he can build on that and have another ally later on.
Adam and Candace may be the primary cuddle pair, but Parvati gets in on the action as well. After the beer and wine on the boat, Parvati ends up cuddling with Adam in the shelter. He says it's all OK, they can both appreciate him. (I'm gagging.)
Yul talks to Becky and says that they have to convince someone to flip. He says that since he has the immunity idol from exile island, there may be a way to convince Jonathan to come back and vote with his old Aitu tribe mates. They agree that Jonathan is the best target for their plan. Yul goes to Jonathan and talks to him in hypotheticals. Basically he tells him that the Aitu people will vote for Jonathan to leave. The Raro people will vote for a member of the old Aitu tribe. Hypothetically, if someone on the Aitu tribe, say Yul, for instance, has the immunity idol and it's used, then Jonathan will be the one to leave with the next highest number of votes.
Jonathan tells Yul he would have to be absolutely certain that Yul had the immunity idol. He would have to see it for himself. Otherwise, if he changes sides again and votes with his old Aitu tribe, he will have at that point, betrayed every single person out there and every member of the jury. He believes he will only have a chance if he is aligned with the person with that immunity idol, but he isn't sure who might have it. If it's Yul, he made a mistake when he switched sides to follow Candace. The really stupid thing is that Candace never thought of his interests at all and did not think of them as allies to begin with. That was all Jonathan's imagination.
Jonathan tells Yul he will consider it but he really can't understand why any of them would trust him. He also says that the Raro people will go mental.
Actually the discussion between Yul and Jonathan is interesting because they both actually understand the game. They dance around each other sizing up the situation, neither one of them sure that the other is trustworthy.
Whales. A portent something big is about to happen? Yul need to talk to his alliance. He tells Sundra the plan and tells her he has the hidden idol. She is so happy. This was a smart move on Yul's part as his people are more solidly bound to him than ever. He next goes to Ozzy. Ozzy is a little worried about what might happen to Nate but he is thrilled to know they have that idol and that it can be used to convince Jonathan to change sides.
Parvati and Candace discuss immunity. They suspect Ozzy will win immunity at the challenge and while they would prefer to send him home, they will have to settle for Yul. Jonathan tells them that Yul wants him to switch sides, but that he thinks that's crazy, there's no reason for him to do it. He does not mention that Yul may have the idol at this point. He says they should try to eliminate Ozzy, the biggest threat in challenges. They say they prefer to vote Yul out. He's perplexed. Why Yul? Jonathan knows if they vote for Yul, and if Yul has that idol, then Jonathan will go home. He tells Candace that they need to wonder if Yul might have the idol because he has been to exile island but the confident Raro tribe ignores him.
Immunity Challenge
They are all put up poles. The poles have some grooves cut in them, and they have some ropes wrapped around them in a few places. They are put on the poles and when they fall off they are out. The last person on their pole, wins immunity. They cannot use the top of the pole to hold themselves up.
Nate is in trouble almost immediately and is soon followed by Adam. Those big bulky guys are having trouble keeping their mass up there with so little of a foothold. Adam is really hurting and falls quickly after only 9 minutes. Nate manages to keep going by sliding down and then being able to climb back up to the top. Jonathan says his big feet are beginning to hurt. Yul explains that the size of their footholds do not increase in proportion to their mass. He says it's kind of like why "elephants can't run up trees". Then he says he will never get a date and Becky corrects him saying, "smart is sexy."
Candace is calm and holding up her tiny frame with no difficulty at all while the bigger men are really struggling. Ozzy, of course, is solid as a rock, hardly moving, apparently completely at ease perched at the top of his pole. Ozzy is, of course, super human.
Jonathan slides down to his last foothold but falls at 12 minutes. Nate slides down again but is able to pull himself back up. Sundra begins to slip a little. Nate is down at 23 minutes. 6 people left, only two of them men. Sundra drops at 34 minutes. Candace shows off by doing some squats in her position. Yul is trying to use his hands to take the pressure off his feet but he can't hold on and is down at 51 minutes. The only male left is Ozzy. Parvati starts to slip and it starts to rain. She drops at 1 hour and 29 minutes. Jeff waves the immunity necklace around. Becky actually tries to let herself down easy and falls on her butt at 1 hour and 30 minutes. Ozzy and Candace are the only two left. It's raining hard by this time, with thunder and lightening. Nate is laughing saying the rain will hurry this up.
Candace slides down the pole. Ozzy hasn't dropped an inch. She finally just lets go and Ozzy wins immunity. I believe Candace decided she was tired, wet and cold and just gave it up because she knows her tribe has the numbers, Yul is going home and it just doesn't matter to her whether she wins this or not.
Aitutonga. Jonathan compliments Candace on hanging in there for so long. Nate is glad Ozzy won the immunity challenge because he likes him and wants to keep him around a while. Adam says that it's obvious though that Ozzy is too big a threat and must go soon. They are all in agreement, Yul will go. Parvati says he's just too brilliant to keep around.
Yul catches up with Jonathan out fishing and shows him the immunity idol from exile island. Now Jonathan must decide what he's going to do. Yul tells him flat out that he either votes with Yul and his group or he will end up going home because he will be their pick to vote for. They even agree to let Jonathan choose who will be sent home from the old Raro group if he agrees to vote with them.
Jonathan goes to Adam and says, "the only problem I have with voting for Yul is that he has been to exile island and he may have the idol. If his tribe all votes for me and we all vote for him, I will end up going home if he has the idol."
Candace says, "there is no way he has it." Adam is shaking his head like it's an impossibility. Jonathan is stunned because none of them are thinking. Jonathan says they have backed him into a corner because they are too lazy to even think through the possibility of Yul having the idol.
Candace and Adam discuss the possibility that maybe they should let Jonathan have his way in this and vote someone other than Yul off and then vote Jonathan off the next time. Nate says that this is ridiculous, that Jonathan has no business running THEIR tribe.
Candace and Adam swap spit.
Jonathan says that Candace and Adam did welcome him to Raro and kept him alive in the game so he does NOT want to betray them by voting for either of them. Yul says he prefers for Adam to go, but that he can accommodate Jonathan in this matter and they agree to send Nate home.
The really brilliant thing that Yul has done here is that he has managed to USE the idol to force Jonathan to vote with him without having to actually use the idol leaving himself vulnerable. Yul really is a huge threat mentally because of his ability to manipulate the politics of the game in the same way that Ozzy is a huge threat because he is physically so capable.
Candace tells Jonathan that Nate is gung ho on Yul going home. He tells her that's fine with him. Jonathan knows that either way, his decision is pivotal and is going to leave people angry with him. They are playing this as if Jonathan has a choice, but in reality, he either votes with the old Aitu tribe, or he's absolutely dead come next tribal council.
Jeff asks them about tribal lines and Sundra says of course the original Aitu people are tight because they have been together for a long time. Nate concurs that Raro is still Raro within the Aitutonga tribe. Becky mentions that Candace and Adam have a very close bond and they try to say that Yul and Becky are also a couple, but Becky says it's different because she doesn't lay in Yul's lap.
Jeff turns to Jonathan and asks if it bothers him to see two people like Candace and Adam teaming up in a way that is different than the way that perhaps Jonathan and Ozzy would team up. Everyone laughs. Jonathan says it is certainly different than he and Ozzy but he really doesn't see it as some big romantic thing and that it doesn't bother him at all.
Ozzy says tonight is pivotal. Either they go down one by one from this point or something amazing happens and they go back to camp a changed tribe. Jonathan comments on how much he has loved being on the island and how happy he is that has formed relationships with people so much younger than himself. Ozzy declines to give away immunity.
They vote.
Candace votes Yul.
Parvati votes Yul.
Adam votes Yul.
Nate votes Yul.
Ozzy votes Nate.
Sundra votes Nate.
Becky votes Nate.
Yul votes Nate.
They are tied. Nate's head is down in his hands.
And Jonathan.....votes Nate.
Nate is stunned. Yul is relieved. Yul's plan has worked. Actually, Nate is FURIOUS. The other Raro members are completely stunned.
Next week on Survivor, everyone is totally angry at Jonathan. Parvati says it pissed EVERYONE off. Candace goes off on him. They are all calling him names.
Nate's final words includes the phrase, "Jonathan, you can I disagree, you dirty skanky whack fruitcake who sold me out and sold out our tribe." He says he loves everyone else, though. O...K.
