I Have the Advantage...For Once
Last week, Parvati cut her thumb, the loved ones showed up, Parvati won reward. Some people got some new island bruises in the immunity challenge taking HARD falls and Jonathan got dumped at tribal council. I still think it was the Alan Alda thing. He left telling the others that he wanted his hat back. Apparently, when people left the island previously, their clothing left behind was sometimes subjected to a little expressive mistreatment involving toilet functions and other nasty things. Jonathan didn't want his hat to fall victim to that sort of thing.
Adam is relieved to be still in the game and that Jonathan is not. He wants to crack the armor of the four in power, Ozzy, Yul, Becky and Sundra. Parvati is also hoping to break into the power alliance and somehow save herself and Adam. At this point, it will be extremely difficult.
Aitutonga, Day 34.

Again you will bust out your swim wear
Shirts will not be allowed
It's not a shame to be dirty
Today, you better be proud
You could be eating and sleeping in splendor
While the others will just get by
To earning rejuvenation
Here's mud in your eye!
They realize it will be a muddy challenge but that the reward will be eating and sleeping somewhere in "splendor." Adam and Parvati say that they must win this or one of them will end up on exile island.
They arrive to find a HUGE mud pit with a railing around it. They have to dive into the pit and cover themselves with as much mud as they can. Then they run to a starting mat and scrape the mud from their bodies into the bucket. At the end of ten minutes, the survivor with the most mud in their bucket wins a trip to a luxury spa where they will receive massages, take showers, have their clothes washed and they will eat like kings. They will sleep in beds and have beer wine and champagne. They may not carry the mud in their hands or arms, they must use only their body. Everyone wants to win. The winner will also send one person to exile island. The winner of the challenge will be joined on this reward by the second and third place finishers. Interestingly, means the person who ultimately wins will NOT be choosing two people to go with them. Usually they have the winner pick. If, for example, Becky won and took her choice, it would most likely be Yul and Sundra, leaving Ozzy behind from their alliance. This might allow Adam or Parvati, whoever did not go to exile island to "work him over" and try to turn him to their side. Ozzy might be hurt to have been left by his group to suffer with the "other side". On the other hand, if Parvati or Adam won, they would take one another and ONE member of the old Aitu group. They would have a chance to bond with that one member, giving them a great reward and leaving his or her alliance mates behind thinking perhaps they can't trust that person after their day at the spa. Survivor, for some reason, eliminated this diplomatic dilemma, for whatever reason, and the people going to reward will be chosen based only on their ability to absorb mud and NOT on their alliances in the game. I just find this odd at this point where usually one of the challenges alerts the players to exactly where they stand as far as boot order within their own alliances.
Ozzy hurdles the hitching post that separates them from the mud pit. They cannot carry mud in their hands or arms, but they can fill their hair with the stuff. Yul discovers he can use the trough of his back to carry mud by staying bent over until he gets to the bucket. Ozzy loads up the back of his head and neck. Jeff comments it's like watching bad performance art. Adam scrapes off his long legs. Ozzy gets a huge pile of mud balanced on his head and takes a huge lead. Parvati loads her hair with so much mud it looks like a turban. They go down to the wire, unloading the mud as quickly as possible. Then they stop and look at one another and they all burst into laughter at the muddy sight.
Ozzy weighs in with 45 pounds of mud, his bucket full and mounded at the top. Parvati weighs in at 24 pounds. Ozzy hugs her warmly. Adam has 22 pounds of mud. Sundra has only 20 pounds and cannot crack into that top three. Becky has 20 pounds, also not enough. Yul's bucket is weighed and he has 22 1/2 pounds and knocks Adam out of the reward. Yul, Parvati and Ozzy will go on reward. Ozzy apologetically sends Adam. Becky and Sundra head back to camp.
Yul, Ozzy and Parvati board a plane still covered in mud to head out to the spa.
It starts to rain about the time Sundra and Becky reach camp. Sundra says she is really sad she didn't get to go to the reward. She says that at least she is there with Becky and that is who she has been with for a long time. They are expressing concern about Ozzy. It wasn't just that he beat them, he beat them by a HUGE margin. Ozzy is competitive and this survivor thing is his element. He is the biggest threat and Becky thinks they must look for a chance to get rid of him or he will win everything.
Parvati says her head is heavy with all the mud in her hair. She laughs at Ozzy saying all she can see are his pearly white teeth. She is planning to try to get close to him to see if he might be willing to switch and help her and Adam stay in the game.
They shower and Ozzy says he will remember that fresh water shower for the rest of his life, it felt so good. They get massages with hot rocks wrapped in towels smelling of coconut.
Meanwhile, Adam is stretched out in a Leonardo Da Vinci pose on the beach of exile island. He's eating some raw seafood and he's hoping to get some sleep so he'll be competitive at immunity challenge. It pours down rain. He shivers with the cold all night, miserable and unable to sleep.
The spa group is eating as they lounge in their white terry robes. Parvati is trying to get to know Ozzy better. They eat and eat. Suddenly, during the middle of their dinner, the storm knocks out the power and they must light numerous candles to light the living room of their suite. Then an island band arrives with native dancers and they enjoy a great music and dance show. Finally, the guys get in the hot tub, naked because their clothes have been taken for the laundry service. Parvati has had wine and champagne so she sheds her pajamas and joins them.
Ozzy asks " Do you guys want to see the Great Cook Islands Humpback Whale?" He then dives over out of the hot tub into the adjoining pool, like a breaching whale. They laugh. His butt was blurred out by the way, darnit. Parvati says, "I just peed in my pants....and I wasn't even wearing any!" None of this is lost on Yul. He knows that they are being flirty. He says that it's possible that Ozzy might be susceptible to this later on. Ozzy says he is playing this game by himself like he always has and now he's playing harder than ever. If a friendship with Parvati helps him, then fine.
Aitutonga, Day 36. Becky says she misses Yul mostly because she wants to talk strategy with him. She wants to consider getting Ozzy out sooner rather than later. Yul can tell that Becky is tense when he gets back from the spa. She tells Yul that while they wanted the Aitu four to go to the end, that Ozzy is very competitive and she points out that he didn't just win the reward, he crushed the competition to win the reward and that beating him will get harder and harder. Yul agrees somewhat, saying he would not want to go to the final two with Ozzy because he knows Ozzy has played an incredible game physically and that he has been less offensive to the old Raro tribe which might help him with the jury. Yul knows he's seen as the leader of the Aitu group and that may count against him with the jury.
Yul says it's a situation where they take the high road, play the game to put the Aitu four in the final four, or they really play the game hard with an eye to win, which would mean getting rid of Ozzy sooner.
Around the campfire, Yul asks Sundra where Parvati is. Sundra replies, "She's sleeping, she had a hard day getting her massage." Sundra asks Yul what she was like at the spa and Yul confides that Parvati was flirty with Ozzy at the spa. Sundra agrees that Ozzy is a threat. Sundra says that right now, they just have to watch what the Raro two are doing and cover their bases, cover their bases and cover their bases.
Immunity Reward. Adam returns from exile island. He's grinning but he says it was a little rough out there. Jeff takes back the necklace from Ozzy and describes the challenge. One at a time they must carry four bundles of puzzle pieces across a balance beam and put them on their individual mats. All four bundles must be moved across the balance beam before they can be used. They will use these pieces to create a table maze, a maze that can be tilted one way or another as two "cannonballs" are rolled, one at a time, through the maze, past decoy holes that must be avoided, and then through two holes, one on the right side and one on the left side, at the other end of the table. First to complete rolling both balls through both finishing holes wins immunity.
The beam is a series of three beams that increase in height. Ozzy is across quickly with his first bundle. Adam falls at the end behind the line and must start over. Becky gets his first bundle across and then quickly Yul, but Ozzy has his third bundle about the time Parvati gets her first bundle over the beams. Ozzy has his fourth bundle across before anyone is through with their third bundle, and that is Yul and Parvati. Nobody else is remotely close. Adam hasn't gotten a single bundle over. Yul and Ozzy are both working on the table maze as Parvati gets her third bundle over. Yul is making quick work with his maze, but perhaps too quick. Ozzy is working more slowly. Parvati is untying her pieces.
Ozzy has his first cannonball in the maze and is working carefully to roll it to the end. He gets the first cannonball through. Yul has put his maze together incorrectly and has built a roadblock into his maze and cannot roll a ball through. Ozzy never slows down. He easily completes the maze and wins immunity again. Adam and Parvati look at one another sadly.
At this point, dear friends, your happy recapper here lost her sound on the picture. Apparently, someone at the local affiliate, fell asleep at the controls and punched a button for the Emergency Alert System. Oh well, we thought, surely this will be over quickly, but actually, it stayed on, blocking the sound of Survivor from here to the end of the program. We thought about getting the deaf man who lives upstairs to come down and lip read for us, but that seemed a little over the top. However, I will attempt to use the online version of the program so that I can finish out this last episode before tonight's finale.
Before I do that, Scott and I had a long discussion about how, at this point it might be possible to get rid of Yul. Not that we don't like Yul or want him to go, but just because we were trying to think through some of the available strategies for players. We decided that IF Parvati and Adam were able to convince Ozzy and Sundra to vote with them (which absolutely could not happen) and convince Yul that they were all going to vote Becky out, Yul might give Becky the idol to carry with her to tribal council and then they could all go "neener neener" and vote Yul out who would be left without protection from the idol. They COULD possibly convince Ozzy to vote with them in some way planning to force a tie, which MIGHT make Yul worry for Becky enough to lend her the idol, but there's no guarantee since there would likely be a tie breaker. So, at this point, Yul has, we think, smooth sailing to the finals.
Yul is concerned about Ozzy being a bigger and bigger threat, but he has immunity so they must decide who should go, Adam or Parvati. Adam thinks Yul is the "puppet master" on the island and that he can decide who will stay or go, which is obviously true. Yul is pretty much in charge at this point. Parvati does go to Yul and says that she knows one of them will go. Yul tells Parvati that she is a bigger threat because of her sense of balance and agility. She wins more challenges or competes more effectively than Adam. But Yul sort of reassures Parvati but he doesn't make any promises.
Parvati and Adam do approach Ozzy about changing sides, but he says that would definitely make him a huge target, but Adam tells him that he is a target anyway because of his performance in challenges. Ozzy won't commit where his vote will go. Adam and Parvati are trying to get him to vote for Sundra forcing a tie. They say she is just "along for the ride." Yul and the others notice Ozzy being talked to by Adam and Parvati. Yul goes over and tells Adam that he understands them playing the game but NOT to try to turn Ozzy against his alliance. Adam now thinks he might be a target.
Yul wants to take Jonathan's hat with him to the tribal council. He wonders if it will make Jeff mad if he takes it and gets it back to Jonathan as Jonathan requested when he left. Yul wears the hat and puts it on the jury benches as the tribe enters tribal council. Brad, Rebecca, Jenny, Nate, Candace and Jonathan enter. Jeff comments that Yul brought Jonathan's hat back. Jeff says it is the boldest move to win a jury vote he's ever seen. Becky says that Yul announced he was bringing the hat back and she is sure it was in the back of his mind that it was a play for votes. Parvati agrees. Adam says that Yul is playing for the jury a little bit, but the rest of them aren't. Yul says he just wanted to get the hat back to the guy because he asked and ease any resentment Jonathan might have.
Parvati agrees that she bonded with the guys on the spa reward a bit. Jeff speculates that Parvati might have gotten a little further with the guys and might be raising her position in the tribe that way. Adam says he thinks he is already bottom of the totem pole.
Jeff asks Yul if he realizes that Ozzy, by winning immunity helps himself, but also the entire Aitu four since his winning it keeps it from the Raro group and has allowed them to be voted off. Yul says yes, they realize that and that he knows they have worked together to get this far in the game. I wonder if this is lost on Becky and Sundra who have been lobbying to dump Ozzy at first opportunity, assuming one arises, because of his skill at challenges and favor with the jury. Jeff is really inserting himself into the game at this tribal council, by pointing out Yul's working the jury with the hat and pointing out that Ozzy has helped everyone to get as far as they have with his exceptional skills.
They vote. Parvati and Adam vote for Sundra. Yul, Becky, Sundra and Ozzy vote for Parvati and she is sent home. Adam is chewing his nails as Jeff tallies the votes. I think he was seriously concerned right up until Jeff reads the first vote for Parvati.
There isn't any animosity about the vote and Parvati waves goodbye at her tribemates and they wave back.
And we are down to the final five: Adam, Ozzy, Yul, Becky and Sundra. There is a hint that the Aitu four will turn on one another and Yul comments he fears the game will become cutthroat.
This has been great fun, recapping again this time around. I usually don't do the finale because well...it's OVER. This has been just a great game this time. I'm personally rooting for Ozzy. I wouldn't mind a Yul/Ozzy final two, but I hear it's going to be a final three this year and if so, I don't know which of the others would go along with them. Enjoy the finale...I'll be watching too.
